‘A Walk Through the Garden with Eleanor Roosevelt’ coming to library

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Public Library plans to present “A Walk Through the Garden with Eleanor Roosevelt” with author and historian Carol Cohen in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25.

During this presentation, Cohen will provide a first-person narrative, allowing guests to “meet” the famous first lady and learn about her own Victory Garden and other humanitarian efforts during World War II. During the war, Roosevelt planted an iconic Victory Garden on the White House lawn and encouraged other Americans to do the same. Part portrayal and part PowerPoint presentation, this interactive program is appropriate for adults and teenagers as well as families with older children.

Cohen teaches at Lesley University and is a published historian, playwright and owner of an educational consulting company. She recently published “Begin with a Box: A Hands-on Resource for Teaching and Learning” and is working on a book titled “Lessons with Eleanor Roosevelt.” For more information on her work, visit carollcohen.com.

This program is funded by a grant from New Salem Academy. For more information, contact the library at 978-544-6334 or n_salem@cwmars.org.

Library to host genealogy workshops

NEW SALEM — Beginning genealogy workshops will be held at the New Salem Public Library on May 4, 11 and 18.

This workshop series will be led by Philip Johnson, a local genealogist who specializes in Massachusetts and Swedish research but can help with any genealogy research. Johnson is a genealogist for the Pomeroy Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the assistant state genealogist for the Massachusetts chapter. He has been researching for about 30 years and has experience with several online databases.

The workshops (each from 4 to 5 p.m.) will be hands-on and will focus on the particular interests of the participants, but will cover topics such as how to begin research, how to create a family chart, recommended software, and sites for research (free and paid). Participants will need to bring a laptop to access websites during the workshops.

Registration is required and spaces are limited. You can register in person at the library or by calling 978-544-6334. Directions to the library are available at newsalempubliclibrary.org/contact.
