Senior centers partner for Travel Club

The senior centers of Northfield and Bernardston are partnering for a Travel Club that’s offering two May outings.

On Friday, May 12, at 9 a.m., participants will meet at the Bernardston Senior Center and travel to the Hampshire Mall in Hadley as well as the 110 Grill. Then on Friday, May 16, at the same meeting location and time, participants will travel to Walmart and have lunch at Wagon Wheel.

Sign-ups are limited to six people from each town. There will be a waitlist in the event that a town has spaces open up later. The cost is $6, roundtrip.

Library hosting Seed Swap and Bake Sale

WARWICK — The trustees of the Warwick Free Public Library are sponsoring a Seed Swap and Bake Sale on the front lawn at 4 Hotel Road on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Organizers are soliciting labeled saved seeds in envelopes or small plastic bags with any special instructions for sewing/growing. Attendees may swap for someone else’s saved seeds. They can also bring commercially packaged seeds from any year to swap.

Homemade baked goods will be sold at the event. Donations are appreciated. The event is in memory of Millard and Joyce Chase, Warwick residents who organized plant swaps for many years for the benefit of the library.

NORTHFIELD — The Spring Carnival and Fun Run will be held Saturday, May 20, at Northfield Elementary School. There’s no entrance or game fee, but small donations for food are suggested.

The Northfield Police Department will be closing down part of Main Street, from Northfield Food Mart to the school, so children can start their run at 9 a.m.

The carnival will be held in the back of the elementary school, with a dunk tank — it costs $1 for three balls — and other activities.

While speaking during a recent Selectboard meeting, Northfield Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization member Cheryl George said the Spring Carnival and Fun Run has been going on for 15 years, and she’s been helping for about eight or nine years.

“It’s about bringing families together,” George said.

Senior Center program assistant resigns

NORTHFIELD — Linda Keech, program assistant for the Senior Center and a member of the Council on Aging, has resigned.

Her resignation letter, which was recently presented to the Selectboard, stated Keech has been working with the Senior Center since July 2019. According to the letter, she plans to be involved in the transition of responsibilities.

Spirit Joseph joins Energy Committee

NORTHFIELD — The Selectboard unanimously appointed Spirit Joseph to the Energy Committee, term expiring Dec. 13, 2023.

Vine removal approved in Leyden

LEYDEN — The Selectboard recently approved having Tree Warden Bill Brooks remove vines on the town common this summer.

Cushman Library temporarily closed

BERNARDSTON — Cushman Library at 28 Church St. is temporarily closed as a new septic tank is being installed. The closure is expected to last three to four weeks.

For patrons who have placed holds on library materials, Library Director Karen Stinchfield will be delivering pre-existing holds to patrons' homes each Thursday during the closure. Patrons are also welcome to place holds through Dickinson Memorial Library in Northfield or any other C/WMARS library, just be sure to change the pick-up location. Go to cwmars.org to request items.

Patrons looking to contact library staff are advised the best option is to email cushmanlibrary@gmail.com. Stinchfield will be checking the email account daily.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” Stinchfield said in a statement, “but we will do what we can to serve you during this time.”

Artist leading workshop on self-portrait mirrors

LEYDEN — Artist Rhonda Wainshilbaum will lead a workshop, sponsored by the Leyden Cultural Council, on making self-portrait mirrors that will be open to children and adults on Sunday, June 25, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Wainshilbaum will provide small mirrors with large wooden frames, and collage materials such as magazine pictures, wallpaper, ribbons, glue and paint. Participants can also bring photos.

Participants will use the materials to express their interests, goals and visions, or simply the colors and textures they love on the wooden frame of a small mirror. Words of inspiration can be incorporated. The frames will be decoupaged after planning the composition.

No art experience is necessary. These self-portrait mirrors can be taken home.

There is a $15 fee. All materials will be provided. Participants must register by June 8 by contacting Wainshilbaum at rhondawain@verizon.net, 413-624-5175 or 413-325-3629.

Leyden seeks School Committee member

LEYDEN — The Heart of Leyden 5K and Fun Run will be held Sunday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m.

Recreation Committee auctioning off surplus property

LEYDEN — The Recreation Committee is holding a surplus property silent auction at Avery Field on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Attendees can view the items and place their bids from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Winning bids will be announced between 11:30 a.m. and noon.

Payments must be in cash or check/money order payable to the Town of Leyden. Items must be removed immediately after the sale unless arrangements are made with a Recreation Committee member.

Leyden hosting solar tour

LEYDEN — Several residents will welcome guests to their properties on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to see examples of residential solar installations and answer questions about their experiences with solar power.
