Friends eliminating assistant librarian position

BERNARDSTON — The Friends of Cushman Library came to Wednesday’s Selectboard meeting to inform the board they plan to eliminate the assistant librarian position.

An assistant librarian has traditionally worked 10 hours per week at the library, but the Friends mentioned having trouble retaining someone due to the small number of hours needed. They mentioned employees would use the assistant librarian position as a stepping stone to gaining full-time employment as a librarian elsewhere.

The Friends also noted that having the assistant librarian position is time-consuming for Library Director Karen Stinchfield, citing the amount of hours necessary to train a new employee. As a solution, the Friends opted to eliminate the position and give more hours to Stinchfield. This move does not cost the library additional money.

Northfield cop completes SRO training

NORTHFIELD — Chad Sumner, the town’s newest full-time police officer, has completed all necessary training to act as a school resource officer, Chief Jon Hall announced at Tuesday’s Selectboard meeting.

“I know Officer Sumner is excited for the opportunity if the opportunity becomes available,” Hall told the board.

Sumner, who had been a full-time officer in Greenfield for 17 years, began service in Northfield on Oct. 17. Responding to a question from Selectboard Clerk Bernard “Bernie” Boudreau, Hall previously said Sumner would be a good fit for the open school resource officer position, though it is too early to make that call.
