NORTHFIELD — Once again, the trees in front of Town Hall are lit with hundreds of pure white LED lights, according to Town Hall Master Planning Committee Chair Stephen Seredynski.

The lights were professionally installed by staff at Snow & Sons Landscaping, who also donated their time to trim the trees in advance.

This community service project was funded by the Northfield Area Tourism And Business Association (NATABA) and through private donations from Northfield residents. Contributions are still being accepted in an effort to make the tradition sustainable in the future.

Warwick meeting with education commissioner

WARWICK — The Selectboard has arranged to meet with Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Commissioner Jeffrey C. Riley on March 9, 2020 regarding the town’s proposed redesign of Warwick Community School into a Horace Mann II Conversion School.

The Selectboard had written to Riley in a letter dated Oct. 28, after the Pioneer Valley Regional School District School Committee voted 7-to-5 not to move forward with supporting turning Warwick’s elementary school into a Horace Mann II. The board requested not only the meeting with Riley and Town Coordinator David Young, but also a “fair and data-based review” of the School Committee’s decision.

Under current agreements between the Pioneer Valley Regional School District and the state, however, Riley has authority to take actions following a study, including reconfiguration. Following the discovery of a financial deficit in 2018, an act relative to the financial condition of the district was put in place between DESE and the Pioneer school district, giving Riley more oversight control.

However, the meeting, which will be held at Riley’s Malden office, will occur after the Pioneer budget is set for fiscal year 2021. Meanwhile, the ad-hoc Warwick Education Committee continues to work on its final public charter school application.
