Snowboarder bringing inspirational story to Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A former professional snowboarder who suffered a severe brain injury and almost died after crashing during a training run in 2009 is bringing his story to Massachusetts.

Kevin Pearce, a Vermont native, is scheduled to speak at Springfield College on Tuesday.

Pearce and his brother, Adam, who has Down syndrome, founded the LoveYourBrain LLC foundation, which supports victims of brain injury and their caretakers.

Pearce also advocates for a brain-healthy lifestyle through yoga and meditation.

During practice in December 2009 in Park City, Utah, Pearce was trying a double-cork, one of his sport’s toughest tricks, when he banged his head on the halfpipe. He was rushed to the hospital for lifesaving surgery. He then underwent four months of rehabilitation.

Tuesday’s event is free and open to the public.
