Read alouds aren’t just for kids: Performers to share favorite pieces at New Salem event

Monday, March 12, 2018

NEW SALEM — “Reading Aloud for Grownups” resumes Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the New Salem Public Library with two readers each sharing a favorite piece.

Martha Von Mering, a former resident of New Salem and who was a popular performer in the 1794 Meetinghouse plays, will be one of the readers. Also reading is Sally Howe, from Orange, who came to the rescue after the scheduled reader bowed out. Howe has acted in plays at UMass, Barre Players and other venues as well as locally at the 1794 Meetinghouse. Howe is a retired teacher from Athol High School.

This is the third such reading this year, put on by the Friends of the New Salem Public Library.

Wine, cheese, coffee, tea and special desserts will be offered during the program. There is no charge, but any donation will be accepted.

In the event of snow, the program will be held on March 21.
