BERNARDSTON — Marking the near-completion of an $88,000 grant-funded project to bring digital literacy tools to seniors, the Bernardston Senior Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new computer lab on Tuesday.

“It is tremendous,” Senior Center Director Jennifer Reynolds said of the addition of the new computer lab. “There are so many things online now like fuel assistance applications, RMV appointments and doctor-patient portals. This is huge for people to be able to come here and access the internet.”

Earlier this summer, the state’s Executive Office of Elder Affairs asked councils on aging to submit proposals for digital literacy projects. Bernardston received a grant to add computers at the Senior Center, add a public computer at Leyden Town Hall and acquire 50 tablets to share with seven other councils on aging in the region (Rowe, Heath, Charlemont, Colrain, Warwick, Northfield and Leyden).

“It is important for the Office of Elder Affairs to see us in western Mass. and invest in us,” Reynolds said.

The computers installed at the Bernardston Senior Center are available to access during open hours: Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No appointment is needed.

Along with the new computers, the Senior Center, which serves nearly 600 active members, offers intermediate classes to allow people with some knowledge about technology to expand their skills.

“We are getting people to learn and take a chance with technology,” Reynolds said.

SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) services are also offered at the computer lab on Monday mornings, providing free health insurance information and counseling to residents with Medicare and their caregivers. Appointments can be made in person at the Senior Center or over the phone.

Reynolds explained many seniors are reluctant to ask for help unless their device is displaying an error message. She said the center is equipped with volunteers who can assist with immediate technology needs and can provide lessons on various programs, including Microsoft Office.

“This will make a huge difference,” she said of adding the computer lab. “I am excited for [our members].”
