SHELBURNE — After counting the ballots three times late into Tuesday night, Richard “Rick” LaPierre was elected to be the new member of the Selectboard, winning by a narrow margin.

LaPierre defeated Tricia Yacovone-Biagi by six votes, getting 139 compared to her 133 votes.

Both candidates were serving as members of the Planning Board when they announced their candidacies. LaPierre filled in for a vacant spot on the Planning Board to complete an unexpired term. He had served previously on the Shelburne Planning Board, with four years as chairman. He also served on the Franklin County Agricultural Society and operated the Potpourri Store & Stove Shop and LaPierre’s Advertising Agency. Yacovone-Biagi is currently serving a five-year term on the Planning Board, which expires in 2024.

“I hope to increase input, from our other town boards, committees and commissions, on matters that come before the board for increased transparency,” LaPierre wrote in a statement after winning the election. ” I’d also like to foster more community interest in town government, noting that under 300 of our 1400-plus voters went to the polls.”

Results for uncontested races:

■Assessor, three-year term: Maya Winfrey, 240 votes.

■Town Clerk, one-year term: Joseph Judd, 272 votes.

■Moderator, one-year term: Roland Giguiere, 245 votes.
