GREENFIELD — A Montague man who allegedly tried to hit a Greenfield Police cruiser on Tuesday afternoon was taken into custody after leading authorities on a high-speed chase to Sunderland and back.

The driver reportedly nearly struck a cruiser in Greenfield at around 4 p.m. before going south on Deerfield Street, entering Deerfield on Routes 5 and 10 before that town’s police department picked up the pursuit, according to Greenfield Deputy Police Chief William Gordon.

The suspect then reportedly continued onto Route 116 to the Sunderland Bridge before turning back into Deerfield and heading north on River Road, according to Gordon. The driver then drove down Hillside Road, back to Routes 5 and 10, and reentered Greenfield. An attempt to stop the vehicle using spike strips that would puncture the tires was unsuccessful.

According to Gordon, the suspect then turned onto Cheapside Street in Greenfield before stopping in a parking lot on Montague City Road, where he was apprehended.

The man was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center for a mental health evaluation and to be treated for a minor injury. According to Gordon, he will be charged with motor vehicle infractions related to the pursuit.

State Police and the Montague Police Department assisted as well, Gordon noted. When reached Wednesday, a State Police spokesperson deferred questions to the Greenfield Police Department.
