Gill assessors’ office closed this week

GILL — The Board of Assessors’ office is closed this week. It will reopen July 22.

Any messages left on the office phone will be answered upon the board’s return.

Gill tax collector’s office closed next week

GILL — The tax collector’s office will be closed the week of July 22. It will reopen on July 29.

Hampshire College prof to speak in Erving

ERVING — The Erving Public Library is hosting a discussion on our place in the universe led by Professor Salman Hameed of Hampshire College’s School of Cognitive Science on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Hameed’s research mainly focuses on the relationship between science and religion in Muslim societies, according to Hampshire College’s website. He holds a doctorate in astronomy, and his past research focused on star formation in spiral galaxies.

Hameed also runs a blog on science and religion called “Irtiqa,” and has a regular radio segment on astronomy with Bill Newman on 96.9 WHMP and with Monte Belmonte on 93.9 WRSI.

Learn about gun safety on Saturday

MONTAGUE — Learn household gun safety with Montague Police Staff Sgt. Lee Laster on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Greenfield Savings Bank, 282 Avenue A.

The program is family-oriented, and will focus on proper respect for guns and how they work. Light refreshments will be provided by the bank.
