Disney Pixar’s‘Turning Red’ to be screened at library

ERVING — Teens ages 11 to 19 are invited to enjoy snacks, drinks and conversation on Monday, Feb. 27, at 3:30 p.m during “Teen Movie Monday.”

Disney Pixar’s “Turning Red” will begin showing at 4 p.m. There will also be a craft activity to go along with the movie. No RSVP is needed and drop-ins are welcome.

Common Hall hosting region-centered conversation

MONTAGUE CENTER — A soup dinner, quiz night and “a dialogue about food, farms and food insecurity” will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Montague Common Hall.

Registration is required at greatfallsdiscoverycenter.org/food-for-thought. Seats are limited.

This event is inspired by the “Crossroads: Change in Rural America” traveling Smithsonian exhibit that is currently featured at the Great Falls Discovery Center.

Gill-Montague seeks new School Committee member

MONTAGUE — The Gill-Montague Regional School District is looking to fill an open School Committee seat with a Montague resident.

Interested Montague residents should email Superintendent Brian Beck at brian.beck@gmrsd.org or send a letter to Beck at 35 Crocker Ave., Turners Falls, MA 01376 by Monday, March 6. The committee will consider potential candidates at its March 7 meeting.

Franklin Tech hosts acclaimed welder

TURNERS FALLS — Internationally recognized welder Andrew Cardin visited Franklin County Technical School on Monday, Feb. 13, to speak with students about his range of experience and successes during and after his time as a Career Technical Education student.

Cardin is a graduate of Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton. He has competed nationally and internationally and won gold medals at district, state and national-level SkillsUSA events. He entered the 2015 WorldSkills championships in São Paulo, where he finished fifth in welding. More recently, Cardin has served as an advisor for WorldSkills competitions.

“Andrew is a true success story born from hard work and determination. We are lucky to have him close by and appreciate him taking the time to visit our school, spend time, and pass along knowledge,” Franklin Tech welding and metal fabrication teacher Lorin Burrows said in a statement. “He has competed against the best in the world and his visit is much like having the opportunity as a student-athlete to meet and learn from an Olympic athlete in their sport.”

Fire District nomination papers now available

TURNERS FALLS — Nomination papers for the Turners Falls Fire District’s annual election are now available to all district residents.

Papers may be obtained from the district office at 226 Millers Falls Road until Monday, March 6, and must be returned no later than Wednesday, March 8. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All potential candidates need to obtain 30 signatures from registered voters of the Turners Falls Fire District. Positions up for election include moderator, treasurer, clerk, prudential committee member and water commissioner, with three-year terms.

The election will be held on Tuesday, April 25. Polls will be open from noon to 7 p.m. District residents may register to vote at the Town Clerk’s Office located in Town Hall, 1 Avenue A, or online at RegisterToVoteMA.com. For more information, call the district office at 413-863-4542.

Montague election nomination papers now available

MONTAGUE — Nomination papers for the annual town election are available at the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall, 1 Avenue A, until Monday, March 27. Forms must be returned by Wednesday, March 29, at 5 p.m.

All potential candidates need to obtain 34 signatures from registered voters in Montague to be placed on the ballot. Candidates seeking to be Town Meeting members need to collect 10 signatures from registered voters in their home precinct.

Departments with seats up for election include the Selectboard (three-year term), Board of Assessors (three-year term), Board of Health (three-year term), Parks and Recreation Commission (three-year term), library trustees (three seats with three-year terms and one seat with a one-year term), Montague Housing Authority (five-year term), soldiers memorial trustees (veteran and non-veteran seats with three-year terms) and Town Meeting members for all six precincts.

The election will be held Tuesday, May 16. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Nomination papers for Gill-Montague Regional School District School Committee seats are provided by the Superintendent’s Office at 35 Crocker Ave., which can be reached at 413-863-9324.

The Town Clerk’s Office is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Town Hall is closed on Fridays.
