BUCKLAND — Starting this fall, the Mohawk Trail Regional School District will offer district families a new after-school program for children.

The district’s After Care Program, at the Mohawk Trail Regional School on Ashfield Road, will be open to district students who are enrolled in grades three through six. Transportation will be provided daily from the elementary schools to the program site at no additional cost to families; pick-up is at Mohawk Trail Regional School at 5:30 p.m. daily.

The program will encourage leadership skills, community building and individual growth opportunities in a structured environment.

“Being outside and active will be a big part of our programming,” said After Care Program Director Alia Woofenden. “I think that’s exactly what kids need — to be outside, exploring the world around them. And they will help to decide what they want to do.”

According to Mohawk school officials, Woofenden brings years of after school programming and outdoor learning experience. Her background as a science and environmental educator will provide the After Care Program with a continuum of inquiry-based and project-based learning with a focus on getting children outside to explore the world around them.

Woofenden has spent much of her career working in before and after care programs, as a camp counselor and an outdoor specialist. Most recently, she was the Before and After Care Coordinator at Sanderson Academy.

“I am really looking forward to helping to connect the kids — helping them connect with others in their age groups and become more connected outside their own schools,” said Woofenden.

Besides the After Care Program, Woofenden said Enrichment Program offerings will also be available for an additional fee. Programming could include art or theater, STEM (Science Technology, English and Math) classes and other offerings aimed to enhance students’ learning outside the classroom. Program information is available on the Mohawk Trail Regional School District After Care Program Facebook page.

Program costs vary from $12 per child, per day for regular school day care (3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.), $20 per child, per day for early release days (1:50 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and $25 per child, per day for half days (12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.). Enrichment Program participation is an additional cost.
