BUCKLAND — Mohawk Trail Regional School plans to stick to its original graduation date, but will hold the ceremony in a modified manner.

The Class of 2020’s graduation is scheduled to take place outside at the school on Sunday, according to Principal Marisa Mendonsa. Beginning at 9 a.m., each graduate will be given a 30-minute window to arrive, check in and cross the stage to receive their diploma.

Speeches from Mendonsa, Interim Superintendent Pat Bell and three students will be recorded in the hour before families begin to arrive, from 8 to 9 a.m.

Graduates are allowed to bring up to six guests, according to an email from the principal to families. Each graduate and guest will be asked to sanitize their hands when they arrive, and everyone will be required to wear some kind of facial covering.

Staff will remain 6 feet from graduates and their guests.

“If guidance (from the state) comes out and is different than what we’ve just approved, we’ll have to make edits,” Mendonsa said.

She noted the ceremony will be a little more personalized, as only one student will be in attendance at a time.

“It will be a whole-day process for us,” Mendonsa said, noting a remote ceremony was out of the question in consideration of families without access to the internet.

A tentative plan has been established for moving the ceremony indoors in the event of rain.

She noted that if limitations on gatherings are lifted later in the summer, students have expressed interest in organizing a final event together.
