Celebrate Independence Day with musical refreshment. On July 4, Northampton singer Kimaya Diggs will headline Mohawk Trail Concert’s annual Fourth of July Jazz Concert at the historic Federated Church of Charlemont.

With an airy tone, her clear voice seems to float above bright notes and light harmonies. In the song “How am I Sposta Know” off her most recent album, “Breastfed,” for example, bubbly string instruments give way to Diggs’ clear and lingering vocals. The song has apparent influence from The Beatles and other 60s-era groups. Other songs, such as “Sweet Pea,” are a little more melancholy — graceful strings step down into minor notes beneath Diggs’ much softer voice. At the July 4 show, she will be singing jazz.

According to a statement about the performance, Diggs’ influences span many genres, melding folk, jazz and soul.

Alongside Diggs will be Paul Arslanian, a professional pianist, composer, and dance accompanist. Arslanian, who boasts a long portfolio of work spanning decades, has been a lecturer in dance and an accompanist for the dance department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 1999. Currently, Arslanian is a member of the Green Street Trio in Northampton. Together, they will perform jazz standards as well as original songs that are written by Diggs.

In the past, Arslanian has recorded with Pepper Adams, Pharaoh Sanders, Woody Shaw and others, and has been a sideman with Freddy Hubbard and Terri Gibbs.

There are no tickets for the concert, admission is first come, first serve. Donations are accepted at the door.

Following Thursday’s performance, The Newman-Oltman Guitar Duo will perform Saturday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m.  The concert will also take place in the Federated Church of Charlemont.

Tickets and information about both concerts is available at www.mohawktrailconcerts.org. Cash and checks only. The church is accessible by wheelchair.
