BUCKLAND — The first Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Fair will welcome current Mohawk, Hawlemont, and Rowe sixth-graders to Mohawk Trail Regional School for a full day of interactive, hands-on learning activities.

The event takes place on Thursday from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sixth-graders from the three districts will gather for a day of learning, getting an opportunity to explore the STEAM fields and become familiar with the course offerings at Mohawk.

Keynote speaker is Bill Whitney, owner of Calderwood Percussion Instruments. Whitney was a composer and sound engineer for Harmonix, the video game developer responsible for creating “Rock Band” who created the drums used in the Broadway musicals “Hamilton” and “SpongeBob Squarepants.” Whitney is now an audio engineer from Dorchester. The day will conclude with a STEAM Fair commencement for all participating students.

This event has been made possible through a Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Fair GEMS grant, which aims to develop and expand sustainable science fair program and bring science and engineering practices into the classroom.
