The General Pierce Bridge will be closed today for emergency repairs, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The bridge, located on Montague City Road, connects Greenfield and Montague over the Connecticut River.

Crews and contractors will put a temporary detour in place beginning around 11 a.m., according to MassDOT spokesman Patrick Marvin. Once the bridge is closed, personnel will perform “necessary immediate” deck repairs. The bridge is expected to reopen by the evening hours, and the work is weather-dependent.

Over the years, sections of the bridge decking pavement has crumbled, requiring emergency repairs. The bridge is on the state’s list of spans requiring renovations.
