GREENFIELD — Traffic was rerouted off Main Street Tuesday afternoon when the city’s Department of Public Works decided to retire an old water line it discovered while flushing another water line.

DPW Director Marlo Warner said his water crew was working late in the day flushing the water main near Conway Drive, across from Solon Street, when it began the unexpected work.

Officers with the Greenfield Police Department noticed the work and traffic issues it was causing, and stopped to direct traffic away from Main Street, according to Sgt. Jason Haskins. He said the scene was cleared by 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
