ORANGE — Cupcakes are going to war in Orange.

For the third year, organizers of the Mahar After Prom Party — a drug-free and alcohol-free party following the annual end-of-the-year dance — are looking at a sweet solution to the question of funding.

“Cupcake Wars” will be held Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Orange American Legion at 40 Daniel Shays Highway. Residents can wander about sampling 30 different cupcakes, and vote for their favorites for a $5 admission fee. All proceeds benefit the Mahar After Prom Party, which offers food, fun and games all night to those who sign up in the spring — Ralph C. Mahar Regional School seniors and juniors will not necessarily have to go to the prom in order to attend the party.

“Bakers will present their cupcakes to attendees and judges, hoping their cupcakes will win the Best Overall Cupcake and the People’s Choice Cupcake cash prizes in four divisions,” said organizer Helene Holmes in a statement.

The four categories of bakers include under-18 bakers, amateur adult bakers, professional bakers and baker teams, each with an adult and a child under the age of seven.

For the $5 admission fee, attendees receive one “voting ticket” — two tickets may be bought for $10. Then, attendees sample the cupcakes and decide which cupcake is tastiest, presenting that cupcake’s baker with their voting ticket. In each of the four categories of bakers, the baker with the most tickets wins the People’s Choice Award. As a token of gratitude, bakers will give full-sized cupcakes to those who vote for them.

According to Holmes, in addition to the People’s Choice Award, the top three bakers in each division will be presented with a Best Overall Cupcake Award, which comes with an undisclosed cash prize.

“A sequestered panel of judges will be sampling all cupcakes and grading them on specific criteria,” Holmes said. “The cash awards will be made after all votes are tallied.”
