A couple clutch free throws by Matt Lyesiuk helped the Mahar summer league team hold on to beat Leominster, 55-53, at Monty Tech High School in Fitchburg on Tuesday.

Lyesiuk did some damage throughout the game, finishing with 21 points including three 3-pointers for Mahar.

Leominster had a chance to win with a desperation heave at the end of the game but the shot missed.

Mahar allowed some offensive rebounds late in the game, keeping Leominster within striking distance. Those rebounds should be cleaned up with the return of center Ayden Santana, who missed the game.

Mahar got steady guard play from Jake Tenney (nine points) and Charlie Barnes (nine points). Coach Enver Softic will look to Barnes for leadership this summer.

“We are looking for him to be the man,” Softic said. “Not necessarily to score a lot. Score a little, defend a little and pretty much be the leader on the floor.”

Mahar trailed by a point late in the game, but a Lyesiuk 3-pointer gave Mahar a 49-47 lead with around five minutes remaining.

After Leominster (0-1) tied the game, a hard take to the rim by Barnes gave Mahar a 51-49 lead.

After a Mahar (1-0) steal, Tenney set up Lyesiuk nicely under the hoop to give Mahar a four-point cushion.

A steal by Noaha Chabot also helped solidify the win, followed by Lyesiuk’s free throws.

Sizer 59, Athol 49 – The Red Raiders dropped their first game of summer league play, 59-49, to Sizer at Monty Tech on Tuesday.

A hot-shooting Noah Pottinger gave Athol an early second-half lead but Sizer caught fire itself from the 3-point line to take the lead back.

Sizer (1-0) used a 10-0 run to pull away from the Red Raiders (0-1).

Pottinger led the Red Raiders in scoring with 13 points. Bryce King (12 points) and Mark Ferrari (11 points) also reached double-figures for Athol.

Sizer’s Sebastian Rodriguez nailed eight 3-pointers and finished with 26 points.
