For fans of postseason competition, the spring high school sports season may provide some additional excitement.

The MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee voted 12-6-1 during a meeting Wednesday morning to recommend that sectional tournaments be played for the upcoming spring season, set to begin in late April. That would be the first season to hold any sort of postseason event since the start of the pandemic, which forced the cancellation of the spring 2020 season altogether as well as the cancellation of postseason tournaments last fall and during the current winter campaign.

The conversation at Wednesday’s meeting was largely focused on pursuing postseason tournaments for the spring. TMC members noted the importance of providing a lively spring season, particularly due to the fact that student-athletes were unable to participate in those sports a year ago.

The vote in favor of sectional tournaments, which would include traditional Western Mass. tournaments in sports like baseball, softball and tennis, came after the TMC had earlier voted down a statewide tournament for this spring. The committee voted 14-4 against contesting statewide tournaments, due in large part to the cross-state travel required.

The MIAA is set to expand to full statewide tournaments beginning in the fall of 2021, essentially eliminating Western Mass. and sectional tourneys. There is considerable momentum from local schools that some form of Western Mass. tournament would continue in the future, however.

The next step for sectional tournaments this spring falls in the hands of individual sport subcommittees. The TMC asked subcommittees to come back with how individual sport tournaments would look, and then the TMC will have the opportunity to weigh in again before sending to the COVID-19 Task Force and Board of Directors for approval.
