COLRAIN — A Shelburne Falls man who got lost hiking in Colrain on Sunday was found safe by rescue crews after calling for help.

The man, said to be in his 60s, went into the woods from East Catamount Hill Road and eventually lost his way, according to Colrain Fire Chief Nicholas Anzuoni. He called 911 after several hours, Anzuoni said, and was located in a wooded area between East Catamount Hill and Stacy roads at roughly 4:30 p.m., after approximately 45 minutes of searching. It was determined the hiker had no injuries and he was escorted to the roadway.

“There’s like a maze of trails up there,” Anzuoni said. “It’s real easy to stray. Next thing you know, you’re not where you think you are.”

Anzuoni said his department was assisted in the search by the Charlemont and Buckland fire departments, both of which used utility vehicles to help find the hiker. Anzuoni said the Whitingham (Vt.) Fire Department stayed at the Colrain Fire Department as potential backup.

Anzuoni said some people would be hesitant to call for help in this type of situation, but it is always the right choice to make, especially before it gets dark and cold.

“It’s always better to just do that,” the chief said.

Shortly after the hiker was sent home, Anzuoni said, fire crews extinguished an unattended fire burning at West Branch Cemetery, along the riverbank.
