Local roundup: Zephyr Jetzon tallies twice as Greenfield girls soccer beats McCann Tech in regular season finale

A pair of goals from Zephyr Jetzon helped the Greenfield girls soccer team close out its regular season schedule in style.

The Green Wave scored twice in the second half and edged McCann Tech, 3-2, in a non-playoff consolation game on Wednesday.

Greenfield improved to 14-4 overall, and will now await Friday’s bracket release for the MIAA Division 5 tournament.

Tayler Bergeron tallied and notched two assists for the Wave, while Elderina Cecunjanin also recorded an assist. Goalie Val Bzomowski turned away 13 shots in a busy outing between the pipes for Greenfield.

Holyoke 8, Athol 3 – The Bears led 2-1 midway through the first half before the visiting Purple Knights exploded offensively to capture a non-playoff consolation game under the lights at O’Brien Field in Athol on Wednesday.

Athol (13-3-1), the Bi-County League champions, now turns its attention to the Div. 5 state tournament.

Boys soccer

Mahar 6, St. Mary’s 1 – It was an emphatic end to the season for the Senators.

After scoring just seven goals in total all season, Mahar exploded for a six-pack in its season finale on Wednesday. The Sens won their first game of the season in the process, dispatching of the Saints in a non-playoff consolation game at Woodward Field in Orange.

Late Tuesday results

Four Rivers 7, PVPA 1 – The Otters cruised to a quarterfinal victory over Pioneer Valley Performing Arts, notching a 7-1 win in River Valley Athletic League playoff action.

Tim Yanko, Russell Herbert, Elliott Sanborn, Jasper Greninger, Kolin Broderick and Aiden McGuinness all scored for Four Rivers, which will host a semifinal game on Thursday.

Basketball

DRIVE League

Matt Petro scored 35 points while Jayden Dawson added 18 points in Futures Unlimited’s 80-66 win over Dunkin Donuts on Sunday in men’s league action of the DRIVE League at Stoneleigh Burnham.

Erik Pardee had 19 points while Joey Paoletti scored 12 points in the loss. 

After, Bruso Computer Solutions knocked off 413 Elite, 80-76, in overtime behind 37 points from Martin Cahillane and 17 points from MIkal Malkovich. Darnell Whitney tallied 22 points in the loss. 

The final men’s league contest of the day saw Brendan Rios toss in 25 points and Rob Jones add 13 points in No Name’s 68-63 win over Rattigan and Sons. Cedric Guy (20) nad Alex Moldanado (15) led Rattigan in scoring. 

In boys varsity action at Stoneleigh Burnham on Sunday, Oscar Korson scored 12 points to lift Brattleboro past Easthampton, 64-48. Chase Canon-Smith scored 11 points in the loss. 

Later, Conner Bergeron’s 10 points lifted Greenfield past Hampshire, 74-63. Braylen Jarrett had 19 points for the Raiders. 

After, Narragansett beat Turners, 43-36, behind 17 points from Sean Kauffman. Alex Beck had eight points for the Thunder. 

Deerfield Rec registrations

The Deerfield Recreation Department is holding registration for its basketball program. 

Registration for grades 1-6 took place on Monday, but registration for just grades 1 and 2 will also run on Dec. 2 at the South Deerfield Town Hall,   running from 5-6 p.m. 

The cost for the grades 1 and 2 instructional program — a co-ed program that runs once a week in January and February —  is $40 while the cost for grades 3-6 league play — a co-ed league that practices once a week and plays games from Jan. 4- Mar. 8 —  is $60. 

There will be a skill assessment for the travel teams. For grades 3-4, that takes place on Nov. 4 at 5:45 at Deerfield Elementary School while grades  5-6 are also on Nov. 4, taking place at 6:45 at Deerfield Elementary.
