Local roundup: Riley Giard, Mohawk Trail softball team blank Athol for 5th straight win

Another standout effort from Riley Giard has the Mohawk Trail softball team peaking at just the right time.

The Warriors ace struck out nine in a complete-game shutout, as Mohawk Trail won its fifth game in a row behind an 11-0 victory over Athol in Franklin County League East action on Saturday in Athol.

Offensively, Mohawk Trail (9-7) received a balanced effort. Addie Loomis tripled and doubled twice in the win, while Abby Moffatt doubled and Aileen Moffatt had a pair of singles. Other offensive contributors included Sophia Goodnow (two singles), Giard (two singles), Maddie Cosentino (single), Adrian Grant (single) and Kaylin Sumner (double).

Athol’s Jaylynn Chapalonis struck out nine for the hosts and doubled at the plate, while Jenna Bonenfant also doubled and Madilyn Hermes had a single.

The stakes go up for the Warriors, which can clinch an automatic berth into the MIAA Division 5 state tournament with one more victory. They travel to Turners Falls on Monday to play Franklin Tech.

Baseball

Turners Falls 14, Lee 4 – The Thunder pounded out 14 hits, and scored four times in the top of the first to set the tone en route to a lopsided victory on Saturday.

Joey Mosca was 3-for-3 with two RBIs to aid the cause, and Kainen Stevens had two hits and drove in three runs. Alex Quezada, Levin Prondecki and Deven Sloan also had two hits apiece for Turners Falls.

Quezada and Dylan Shinall each went three innings on the mound, with Shinall notching the victory in relief thanks to a trio of scoreless and hitless frames.

Powered by Christian Powell and Brady Selivanoff, who had three hits and two runs apiece, Rotary Club edged New Fortune, 13-11, in a Greenfield Minor League Baseball AAA Division contest on Saturday.

Fred Burnap pitch a solid sixth inning for his second save of the year. New Fortune’s Tyler Pietraski had two hits and scored three runs, and Collin Winslow reach base safely four times.

Elsewhere, Paul Budrawich had two hits, Fischer Williams smashed two doubles driving in three, and Henry Kalas blasted a home run to go along with another hit as Pioneer Valley Tire doubled up Bobby C’s DJ Service, 14-7.

Bobby C’s Elias Tripp tripled and singled, and Emerson Maxam also had a hit. Laurence Shields battled at the plate, working three walks.

In AA play, Dezmond Jurkowski roped three hits and tossed a scoreless fifth inning to aid Fitzgerald Real Estate to a 19-15 win over Gagne Wealth Management. Vinny Toothacker smacked four hits and drew a walk in the win, and Noah Marguet also had three hits to go with two walks.

Gagne’s Mason Lovett registered three hits, and Carson White (two hits) and Connor Martin (good defense) also paced the club. Jason Philstetler struck out three in an inning of work.

In other action, Kyan Skutnik-Sheffield notched two hits, Jojo Locke played well defensively at first base, and Mason Facey struck out the side to close the game in the sixth as Ruggeri Real Estate held off Baker Financial, 12-7.

Baker’s Jacob Beaudoin and Aiden Call both had three hits. 

In Majors Division action, Messiah Maysonet had an RBI single and a great catch in right field and Isaac Tripp added two hits for Maniatty's in a 10-5 win over Turners Falls. Osiah Ballard struck out eight in three no-hit innings.

Malachi Bouchard, Davis Burnett and Spencer Towne led the way for Turners Falls, each with a hit.

In Rookie Division play, Colton Murdock and Sam Call both played well defensively and each had two hits to send Martin’s Farm to a 7-5 win over Terrazza.

Parker Clough Campagna crushed three hits and Ethan Martin had two hits and two putouts for Terrazza.

In other Rookies play, Tadhg Boyle was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Charlie Schwerin went 3-for-5 as Gruber & Tripp beat Parody Builders, 14-9. Oliver Avery and Brody Neipp had multiple hits for Parody.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Lucas Wallner and Zelda Rossi had multiple hits as Parody Builders defeated Martin's Farm, 12-4.

Liam McDonough and Weston Sibley both had multiple hits for Martin's Farm.

Youth softball

In action played Friday, Raine Wonsey and Lenyx White each had two hits, while Addison Martin added a hit and Lexi Hawkins struck out seven in the circle to help Triton to a 17-6 win over Pipione’s.

For Pipione’s, Leah Batiste and Maddie Phillips both had a hit and Sammi Suhl pitched a great game with five strikeouts.

Golf

CCG Two-Man Scramble    

Three teams tied for the low gross at Saturday’s Country Club of Greenfield Two-Man Scramble.

Connor Piecuch and Jack Diefenderfer shot 61 to share low gross honors with the tandems of Justin McCloud/Andy Lesenski and Nate Burdick/Kevin Bagge.

Dave Sabourin/Tim McKenna and Jake Willis/David Kennedy tied for fourth with rounds of 62.

Low net went to a pair of teams – Dan Fleming/Adam Holmes and Jason Kelton/Jamie Crocker (61). Right behind with 62s were Al Griffin/Mike Laga and Bill Luippold/Dan Gavin.
