GREENFIELD — Six years after the company was established, FootCare by Nurses has grown from three employees to 40 and, with three recently signed contracts, expanded its services beyond Franklin County to include central Massachusetts, Springfield and a few communities in Connecticut.

“When I began this business a number of years ago, people told me it was impossible,” recalled founder and CEO Kate Clayton-Jones. “It’s really exciting to have been able to say yes, there is a need, but also to be able to meet that need.”

Earlier this month, FootCare by Nurses, which offers home service foot care, signed contracts with the Springfield-based Program of All-Inclusive Care (PACE) and the Dudley-based Tri Valley Elder Services. Footcare by Nurses also will take on clients of the former Connecticut-based Pedicare.

“This expansion and continued growth mean adding close to 1,000 new clients and $300,000 in new revenue, which will trickle in slowly as referrals for foot care come in,” Clayton-Jones said. “We are adding two administrative positions and 10 nursing positions, and we are hiring for them now.”

Clayton-Jones, who resides in Deerfield, said FootCare by Nurses aims to redefine elder care by making evidence-based footcare central to general health.

“Our nurses and the staff at FootCare by Nurses believe everyone deserves great evidence-based foot care,” she said. “We have built a world where the patient-nurse relationship has trust extending beyond standard care.”

According to Clayton-Jones, specially trained nurses meet patients in their homes or at clinics.

“FootCare nurses literally sit on the floor at the patient’s feet and examine the feet and legs,” she explained. “They look for circulation problems, sores and callouses, and release tension in the toes that can limit flexibility and lead to falls. They check the fit and lacing of shoes and make recommendations about socks.”

For those who would prefer going to a clinic rather than a home visit, FootCare by Nurses has offices in Greenfield at 63 French King Highway, Lenox and Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

“I could not do this without the fantastic nurses and administrators that I have,” Clayton-Jones said. “It takes a lot to make it happen. It’s lovely to see the appreciation but also the love that the nursing staff have for this work because it’s really meaningful work.”
