GREENFIELD — The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, but that is not the reality for everyone — especially those who have lost loved ones.

Living Waters Assembly of God will hold a program for those dealing with grief during the holiday season on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The program, called “Surviving the Holidays,” is a faith-based, one-night event that’s part of a national organization called “GriefShare.”

“Some people just don’t know what to do, maybe they don’t have family around so they’re kind of lost, and to feel like that has got to be awful, really,” program facilitator Barbara Sund said. “The holidays are supposed to be a happy time, in particular Christmas, but Thanksgiving you’ve got family around, but to have this person missing has got to be difficult.”

Sund said the church doesn’t want people to feel lost and alone, and the program is free and open to everyone.

“They say you don’t get over grief, you get through it,” she said. “It’s a day to day process, it gets easier as time goes on.”

The program will feature an introduction and a 40-minute video, followed by a discussion during which attendees can speak if they want to. Refreshments will also be served.

The church also runs a 13-week GriefShare program about three times a year. Facilitator Samuel Pyfrom said it has gotten a great response.

“I’ve had people ask me, so is this for people who just lost somebody? I said, ‘No, it’s for people who have lost anybody anytime, it doesn’t matter if it’s been 50 years or yesterday, it doesn’t matter,’” Pyfrom said.

The Rev. David Levandusky said if he were to open a new ministry somewhere, GriefShare would be the first program he’d implement.

“Ministries come and go, but people don’t stop dying,” he said. “I think it’s one of the most important ministries any church could have, and we’re blessed to have it.”

Those who are interested in attending “Surviving the Holidays” or participating in the GriefShare program should contact Sund at 768-7814.
