Regarding impeachment

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Your front page article on June 6, “Can Trump pardon himself?” left out an important fact in discussing impeachment. The article states that two presidents were impeached, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, and that neither were removed from office. But there was one president for whom the impeachment process resulted in his leaving office — Richard Nixon.

True, the impeachment and conviction did not occur because when Congress and the special prosecutor uncovered massive evidence of obstruction of justice, Nixon resigned. The process worked because in those days, Republican representatives and senators had the integrity to refuse to tolerate crimes committed by a president of their own party. Are there any Republicans today who would follow their example?
