Admittedly, the controversy about ADUs, or accessory dwelling units is, to say the least, complicated and confusing. The idea of providing more housing for folks in need is very appealing. But one should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

As I understand it, the state legislation provides fertile ground for wealthy investors or groups of investors to buy single homes and with no say by neighbors or the town to convert homes into multiple rental units, and also build additional structures on the property to rent out.

This of course, in my mind, would be disastrous on many fronts. We should encourage, if not insist, that the state Legislature revisit that ADU policy and fine-tune it so as to protect neighborhoods and our communities from rapacious real estate moguls.
