Fifteen years ago a man, recently retired from a valued career at Deerfield Academy, walked into Franklin Medical Center and offered his services as a volunteer. In the beginning he made the mailroom his staple position. Not an easy task, learning the locations of all the various departments and the staff names associated with them as they ebbed and flowed over the years. I believe he used his sense of efficiency to create the best route around the hospital with the mail cart, used to this day.
He didn’t stop with that. Soon he was taking shifts at the front desk, assisting patients and visitors with where they needed to go, often walking with them himself. He was also the go-to for filling in or staffing special projects. Elevator down? He’s the alternate route provider. Need packets made up? Not his favorite, but he’d do it. Message needed to be delivered? He’s your guy. Always gave money for the holiday presents for people in the Mental Health Unit.
Quiet, unassuming, rolls with changes. By 2013 he was at the hospital four days a week, often two shifts a day.
Today we are honoring Mr. Peter Brush for his accumulated 10,000 hours of volunteering at our community hospital. Thank you, Peter.
