Every man, woman, and child should read Richard Szlosek’s My Turn [“Rebecca the elite raccoon,” Recorder, May 23]. Calvin and Grace Coolidge decided to make a raccoon their pet, but when they left the White House, they “donated” Rebecca to the National Zoo. Why do people have pets if they’re not serious about keeping them? Getting rid of a pet is cruel! And why do people leave their pets in a hot car with the windows rolled up while they go shopping or out to eat? That’s inhumane! It doesn’t have to be that warm outside for a car to become dangerously hot inside. When it’s 80 degrees Fahrenheit outside, the temperature inside your car can heat up to 99 degrees Fahrenheit within 10 minutes. Rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car. Keep pets safe when it’s hot outside.
