SHELBURNE FALLS — The Iron Bridge will be closed until Friday Nov. 18 for structural repairs.

The Buckland police instructed pedestrians to use the Bridge of Flowers to cross over the Deerfield River while the bridge is completely closed.

A company called SPS New England is performing the work on the bridge for MassDOT, according to Town Administrator Terry Narkewicz.

The team is conducting deck resurfacing operations, and the cost of the deck resurfacing work is approximately $200,000, according to MassDOT spokesperson Judith Reardon Riley.

In August, the Shelburne Falls Village Task Force requested MassDOT commence construction in late October/early November or early spring to avoid closure during the summer and fall foliage tourist season. This request was written in a letter signed by the Buckland and Shelburne selectboards.

Asked if the construction will re-open the sidewalk that has been closed on the bridge, Reardon Riley wrote in an email, “Sidewalk construction operations are scheduled to take place in Spring 2023 and will include steel repairs.”
