ATHOL — Anyone who has considered volunteering as an adult literacy tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol (LVOA) is encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Athol Public Library. According to a LVOA press release, attendees will be provided with a taste of the free Adult Basic Literacy Tutor Training course scheduled for Aug. 6, 8, 10, 13, 15 and 17, and learn how trained tutors work with adults to improve their reading and writing skills.

LVOA provides free, private and confidential tutoring to adults and youth ages 16 and older in basic reading and writing, and in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). LVOA also offers services such as Book Bags for Babies, a program that distributes children’s books to encourage reading to infants and toddlers.

Attendance at an informational meeting is required before taking a training course. To sign up, contact Louise Doud, LVOA Coordinator, by email at or phone at 978-249-5381. Leave your contact information, including phone, address and email. An RSVP form will be sent.

The next Adult Basic Tutor Training course will be held Oct. 15, 19, 22 and 26, and Nov. 5 and 9, with informational meetings on Sept. 17 and 21.
