GREENFIELD — After serving as vice president for the past year, Precinct 2 Councilor Dan Guin will assume the role of City Council president for 2023, a position most recently held by Precinct 6 Councilor Sheila Gilmour.

“I look forward to the opportunity to work with everybody,” Guin said after accepting the nomination. “I think over the last year, I’ve tried to be a good leader and keep us on track and … make sure I’m more concerned about the council and city of Greenfield than anything else.”

President will not be an unfamiliar role for Guin, who was the original president of Greenfield’s Town Council, at the same time that Christine Forgey became the first mayor, forming some of the precedent for city governance that exists today. Guin, who will continue to serve as chair of the Appointments and Ordinances subcommittee through January, received a unanimous vote of support at City Council’s organizational meeting Thursday evening while Forgey, now an at-large councilor, was chosen to serve as City Council vice president.

Upon accepting the nomination, Forgey announced this year will be her last serving on City Council, as she does not plan to seek reelection in November.

“I’d like to end my council career in a leadership position,” Forgey said. “I have a lot of experience in leadership and I feel very strongly I can do an excellent job.”

Forgey said she is “available at all hours” and has few commitments that would prevent her from being able to attend meetings or be available to constituents and town officials. She will continue to serve as chair of the Ways and Means subcommittee through the rest of the month.

“I’ve worked with Dan Guin and … I know he and I can get along very well,” she said.

Outgoing president Gilmour also received a nomination, but councilors voted by majority to name Forgey as vice president.
