From the first moment of Steve Henderson and Will Chalmus’ taut drama, “White, Black & Blue,” the action never ceases.

In the new play by Silverthorne Theater Company, three men are thrown together in a tense situation none of them would ever have chosen. The third show of Silverthorne’s fifth anniversary season opens July 19 at the Hawks & Reed Performing Arts Center, 289 Main St. in Greenfield.

The play follows the story of Walter, a black man, who breaks into the home of Joe Renshaw, an older white man, late at night. Walter has fled the scene of an altercation with a white off-duty police officer, during which he took the officer’s gun. It is not the way it seems. As Joe and Walter struggle to establish a fragile détente, Officer Lou Rankin finds the house. A taut life and death stalemate ensues as the three desperate men strive to stay alive and protect their families. Issues of race, trust, responsibility and last straws comprise powerful themes in the story.

Henderson, a playwright and veteran Pioneer Valley actor, teamed up with Chalmus, a professor at Brandeis University, to write the timely piece. The play, which is directed by Keith Langsdale, received its first public reading at the Majestic Theater in West Springfield back in 2016. Actors include: Sam Rush as Joe Renshaw, Daniel Rios as Walter Jones and Steve Pierce as Officer Lou Rankin.

Performances are scheduled for July 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, July 22, at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the play may be purchased online through Eventbrite.com or by calling the Silverthorne Box Office at 413-768-7514. Discounted tickets are available at World Eye Bookstore in Greenfield and Broadside Books in Northampton.
