GREENFIELD — Portions of Hope Street may be reduced to one lane of traffic at times over the next few weeks for sidewalk reconstruction scheduled to begin Monday.

Sidewalk replacement, which will start on the west side by the Russell Street railroad underpass and finish at 212 Hope St., is expected to take about four weeks, according to a notice on the city’s website. Work will be weather-dependent.

“The sidewalk is in very poor condition,” said Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner II. “We are planning on paving that section in the next couple of years. We always try to look at the sidewalks, especially when there’s no tree belt ... and we try to do the sidewalks first, so we don’t have to dig up the edge of a brand new road when we pave it.”

Warner said $100,000 was appropriated for the project in the spring. The department accepted a $91,710 bid for the work from Detour Construction of Ludlow.

Although he anticipates one lane of traffic at many times, Warner said he doesn’t expect there will be any road closures as a result.

“The contractor and the engineering department will work with the residents along the way,” he said. “For example, when they work through their driveway entrances.”
