High schools: Madelyn Fagan tallies twice, Frontier girls soccer blanks Mahar 2-0

Madelyn Fagan tallied a pair of goals, and visiting Frontier rode a strong defensive effort to take down Mahar, 2-0, in a Pioneer League North girls soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at the Woodward Complex in Orange.

“It wasn’t our best performance today but we battled,” said Frontier coach Andy Rup. “[Mahar] Coach [Chad] Softic does a great job game planning and his girls made it tough on us.”

Fagan got the scoring started 16 minutes into the game, when she scored a goal with an assist from Skyler Steele to make it 1-0.

That advantage carried into halftime, and the Redhawks (2-0-1) put things away in the 52nd minute when Fagan notched her second of the contest for a 2-0 cushion.

Frontier goalie Jocelyn Antes made three saves for her first clean sheet of the season. The visitors were buoyed defensively in front of Antes by the play of Addie Morrey and Claire McFarland.

Frontier returns home to play Easthampton on Friday while Mahar (0-2) travels to Holyoke.

Greenfield 6, Gateway 1 – Elderina Cecunjanin and Mia Snedeker tallied two goals apiece, and the Green Wave got into the win column for the first time in 2023 thanks to a dominant 6-1 Bi-County League victory on Wednesday in Greenfield.

Greenfield (1-1) took a quick lead when Carly Blanchard scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Cecunjanin.

Gateway tied it just over two minutes later, and the game stayed 1-1 into halftime.

The Wave got to work after intermission, and Tayler Bergeron made it a 2-1 game with a 44th minute strike from Cecunjanin.

Snedeker and Cecunjanin took control from there, each netting two goals while Sarah McCloud assisted on both of Cecunjanin’s markers.

Annie Cobileanschi made four saves in net for the Wave.

Pioneer 8, Renaissance 2 – Hailey Ring had a day, and the Panthers rolled to a Pioneer League North victory in Northfield.

Ring tallied five goals, lifting Pioneer to its first victory of the season on Tuesday.

The Panthers (1-1) also received two goals from Maddie Keefe and one from Sahana Heilman. Heilman, Natalie Rios and Natalie Johnson all notched assists in the win.

Athol 7, Pathfinder 0 – The Bears improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season with a dominant victory on Wednesday night at O’Brien Field.

Athol, which led 6-0 at halftime, has outscored opponents 13-1 through three games. Liz Mailloux led the offense with a hat trick, while Hannah Cardosa tallied a pair of goals and Samantha Mailloux and Alauna Choquette each found the back of the net.

Kylah Blundon dished out three assists for Athol, while Liz Mailloux added two assists. Maddi David and Samantha Mailloux also registered helpers, and goalies Ava Adams (two saves) and Samantha Mailloux (one) combined for the shutout.

Volleyball

Frontier 3, Central 0 – Two nights removed from a difficult five-set win over Amherst, the Redhawks made quick work of Springfield Cental on Wednesday night.

Frontier racked up 17 aces as a team en route to a 3-0 sweep in an Eastern League contest in Springfield.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 25-14.

Allie Pierce recorded seven aces and 19 assists for Frontier (4-0), while Caroline Deane put down seven kills and two aces. Olivia Machon had five aces, and Kate DeMaio added five kills in the victory. Gabby Adams paced the defense with five digs and added three kills.

Field hockey

East Longmeadow 9, Mahar 0 – It was another top-notch opponent on the schedule for the young Senators Wednesday night, as they fell to Valley League foe East Longmeadow in Orange.

Goalie Zoey Woodard made 21 saves in a busy outing between the pipes for Mahar, which fell to 0-3.

Boys soccer

Athol 6, Franklin Tech 1 – The Bears improved to 3-0 on the season with another lopsided victory on Wednesday night in Turners Falls.

Karim Thompson, Nathan Parayson, Chouaga Tchiedjie Blaise Rodas, Trace Flynn, Elhadi Diallo and Amara Keita all tallied for Athol in a balanced scoring effort. Antonio Carbone assisted on two of the Bears’ strikes.

Jaxon Kotwright-Clark scored the Franklin Tech goal with an assist from Preston Duvall.

Deerfield results

The Deerfield Academy girls varsity soccer team hosted Brooks School in their 2023 season home opener on Wednesday. Despite, outshooting Brooks, the Big Green fell to the visiting squad, 2-0.

Cross country

Jackson Caron captured first pl ace in 18:10 for the Greenfield boys cross country team in a quad meet with Hampshire Regional, Westfield Tech and Mahar on Tuesday at Stanley Park in Westfield.

Other scoring runners for the Green Wave were Alex Scotera  (15th, 21:30), Mason Youmell (18th, 22:08), Dylan Breiwick (24th, 23:50) and Javion Williams (25th, 24:05).

On the girls side, Ava Fortin paced Greenfield on the strength of a fourth-place overall finish in 23:24. Rose Fortin (12th) was next for the Wave in 27:44, followed by teammates Alice Fortin (13th, 28:01) and Lilliana Badillo (17th, 30:34).
