High schools: Brayden Thayer, Ethan Mauthe help Pioneer golf roll past Easthampton in opener (PHOTOS)

It was a dominant start to the season for the Pioneer golf team.

The Panthers had all four scoring golfers shoot rounds of 41 or better, helping them roll to a 152-227 victory over Easthampton on Tuesday at Northfield Golf Club.

Brayden Thayer set the tone as the match medalist, firing a 1-under 35 on the par 36 course. Ethan Mauthe was just one shot back for Pioneer, as he carded an even-par 36.

Rounding out the scoring Panthers were Ben Werner (40) and Mike Stennes (41), though the hosts also received a sub-50 round from Hugh Cyhowski (46).

Easthampton’s Amelia Gruber had the low round of the day for the visitors (44).

Turners 170, Athol 224 — Make it two wins in a row to open the season for the Thunder, which cruised to a victory at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls on Tuesday.

Joey Mosca was the match medalist after posting a 2-over 37. Reese Elwell was next with a 43, followed by Darian Burnett (44) and Jack Day (46).

Athol’s Ben Kearney had the low round of the day (53) for the visiting Bears, which played their first match since re-instituting the golf program. Brandon Adams was next with a 56.

Franklin Tech 165, Hopkins 176 — Medalist Brady Booska carded a round of 1-under 35, helping the Eagles to a solid victory over the Golden Hawks in action Tuesday afternoon at Holyoke Country Club.

Gabe Mota was next for Franklin Tech with a 38, while Tyler Lafountain (45) and Will Belval (49) also figured into the scoring.

Ryley Regan fired the low round of the day for Hopkins, carding a 39.

Field hockey

Northampton 2, Turners 0 — Connor Herzig stopped two shots in the Thunder net, but host Northampton notched a 2-0 home victory in the season opener on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils scored both of their goals in the second half. Camilla Brewer and Maya Berman tallied for the hosts.

Westfield 13, Mohawk Trail 0 — Cleome Gardner made 20 saves in net for the Warriors, which dropped their season opener on the road in Westfield on Tuesday.

The Bombers led 8-0 at halftime. Norah Bargatti scored four goals and notched three assists.

Girls soccer

Franklin Tech 4, Pioneer 1 — Anne Kolodziej picked up right where she left off last season, pumping in a hat trick to lift the Eagles to a victory in Turners on Tuesday. 

Ella Kolodziej opened the Tech scoring seven minutes in by blasting in a free kick from 20 yards out. Anne Kolodziej scored three minutes later to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead. 

Kolodziej scored again with 15 minutes to go in the half before Panther Hailey Ring found the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1 at the break.

Anne Kolodziej wrapped up the hat trick with a second-half goal to seal the win. 

Madyson Lynde recorded an assist while Kylee Gamache made three saves in the win.

Kyler McClelland stopped 15 shots for Pioneer.

Volleyball

Mohawk Trail 3, Hampden Charter West 0 — Emma Canaday put down four kills while Riley Giard and Palmer King notched three kills apiece to help the Warriors roll in their season opener on Tuesday night.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-11, 25-10.

Maddie Cosentino recorded five aces in the win, as Mohawk Trail amassed 14 as a team with  three apiece from King and Jadelyn Wheeler. King dished out 11 assi sts on the night.

Boys cross country

Mohawk Trail 15, Hop kins 50
Mohawk Trail 21, Easthampton 34 —
Paced by individual winner Vincent Gauthier, the Warriors earned a tri-meet sweep on Tuesday in Hadley.

Gauthier crossed the line first overall in 15 minutes, 49 seconds on the 2.75-mile course at Hopkins Acaedmy. Teammate Peter Healy was next across in second place with a time of 17:58, while fellow Mohawk Trail runners Rex Kuoppala (fourth, 18:58), Aymeric Loucka (seventh, 20:25) and Leo Boltz (10th, 21:29) rounded out the team’s scorers.  

Girls cross country

Hopkins 15, Mohawk Trail 50
Easthampton 15, Mohawk Trail 50 —
The Warriors were unable to figure into the team scoring as just four runners managed to finish the race in Hadley due to the extreme heat.

Natalie Lanoue was the overall winner on the 2.75-mile course, posting a time of 21:34, while teammate Anya Read took third overall in 22:17. Katie Osterman (seventh, 31:25) also posted a top 10 finish individually for the Warriors.
