SPRINGFIELD — The Frontier football team finally got one to fall in the win category Friday night at Berte Field.

The Redhawks outlasted Commerce, 40-20, in an Intercounty League South matchup to improve to 1-5 on the season.

“We clicked on all cylinders,” said Frontier running back Josh Semaski. “We had a little bit of a rough first half with our defense, but we got that straightened out in the second half.”

The Redhawks forced the Red Raiders to turn the ball over three times in the third quarter alone – one fumble and two interceptions. One of those picks led to a Frontier touchdown when QB Sam Schreiber bulled in for a 1-yard score at the 3:42 mark of the third.

“Those turnovers were key,” Semaski said. “We stopped them on fourth downs which was huge and that set the tone for the second half.”

The Red Raiders were held off the board entirely in the second half after putting up 20 points before intermission.

The game looked dead even early on. Frontier scored first at the 9:34 mark to open the game with a 6-yard rushing touchdown from Semaski. Commerce answered right back at 6:46 with a 35-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver, Joshua Mitchell.

At the 5:51 mark, Semaski notched his second touchdown of the night, this time via a 45-yard rushing score to make it 12-6. He faked right, turned his body to switch fields and found himself the open turf needed to go all the way and ease into the end zone.

The Frontier defense also forced a safety in the first half, and Schreiber added a 1-yard rushing touchdown at the 1:38 minute mark.

After another Commerce touchdown, the Hawks answered immediately as Semaski ran for 29 yards to push the score to 20-12. Commerce answered back again for its last touchdown of the night with a 10-yard rushing score to pull even, 20-20 at halftime.

Three unanswered touchdowns for Frontier pushed Commerce out of sight quickly. Tight end Dan Diemand scored in the second half while Schreiber added two more scores. The defense forced multiple turnovers, which became a recurring theme as Frontier took advantage in the second half.

Frontier will look to keep the momentum going when it hosts Belchertown next week.
