School Roundup: Mahar wrestling team finishes league slate undefeated

An undefeated run through the Suburban League North concluded with another dominant effort for the Mahar Regional School wrestling team on Tuesday night.

The host Senators won four of the six matches contested and cleaned up with a horde of forfeiture victories to capture a 69-12 victory over Franklin Tech.

Mahar capped its SL North regular-season title with a perfect 4-0 mark, as the club defeated Franklin Tech, Athol, Frontier and Granby this winter to claim an outright championship.

Issa Gilmore scored a pin in just 35 seconds at 106 pounds for Mahar, while Domanic Cacciolfi was a winner at 126 pounds. Anthony Nye snagged an 8-3 decision at 182 pounds, and Gracin Bisceglia scored a first-period pin at 195.

Franklin Tech’s Kyle Brunelle was a winner at 138 pounds, while Josh Brunelle joined him in the winner’s circle with a first-period pin at 132 pounds.

Mahar amassed eight victories via forfeit, filling out the rest of the weight classes to rack up the points.

Girls basketball

Greenfield 52, Putnam 23 — The Green Wave are officially postseason-bound.

Katie Haselton registered a game-high 23 points in addition to 12 steals and six assists, and host Greenfield cruised past Putnam, 52-23, in an independent girls basketball game Tuesday night at Nichols Gymnasium.

Greenfield improved to 10-4 overall, punching its ticket to the WMass Division 3 postseason in the process.

The Wave led 27-10 at halftime, and outscored the Beavers by a 16-8 margin in the third quarter to put things out of reach.

Amber Bergeron continued to play well during her first run of varsity games, scoring 10 points and pulling down five rebounds. Lillia Kachelmeyer and Racquel Provost scored seven points apiece, while Tess Rancourt pulled down seven boards.

Smith Academy 47, Turners 44 — Host Turners Falls had three chances at the go-ahead basket in the waning seconds, but Smith Academy held on for a 47-44 independent victory on Tuesday in the Powertown.

Turners led 33-27 entering the fourth quarter, but the Falcons got hot offensively and outscored the Thunder by a 20-11 margin in the final frame to capture the road win.

Taylor Greene’s 15 points paced Turners (4-10), and Kendra Campbell joined her in double figures with 10 points. Steph Peterson tossed in six points and Lindsay Whiteman followed with five.

Karlie Guimond led Smith Academy (5-9) with 18 points.

Girls swimming

Turners Falls 75, Renaissance 25 — Five different individual swimmers scored victories, propelling Turners Falls to a dominant 75-25 win over Renaissance in a Constitution League girls swim meet on Tuesday in Springfield.

Hannah Marchefka captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 2 minutes, 57.25 seconds. Olivia Whittier took first in the 50 freestyle (27.91 seconds), and the Thunder also received victories from Hannah Dziedzic (500 freestyle, 8:22.26), Allison Wheeler (100 backstroke, 1:19.60) and Jade Tyler (100 breaststroke, 1:19.10).

Boys swimming

Renaissance 103, Turners Falls 22 — Nik Martin and Cameron Bradley won individual events but the Thunder fell to Renaissance on the boys side, 103-22.

Martin was the winner of the 200 individual medley in 2:40.22, and Bradley won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.62.

Camden Bonnett finished third overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:53.21.
