The Mohawk Trail boys track and field team is heading into Friday’s Western Mass. Div. 2 championship on a high note. 

Hosting Athol on Tuesday, the Warriors earned a 72-46 victory behind wins in the long jump (17 feet, 2 inches) and triple jump (34-11.5) from Qwade Niquette and victories in the high jump (6-0) and 110-meter hurdles (16.6 seconds) from Chay Mojallali. 

Other winners for Mohawk Trail were Daniel Gougeon in the pole vault (6-6), Peter Healy in the mile (5:07.1), Vincent Gauthier in the 400 (55.8) and Aidan Gauthier in the 800 (2:31.8).

The Warriors also won the 4x400 relay (4:25). 

For the Bears, Nicholas Leblanc won the shot put (39-9.5), javelin (122-8) and discus (134-11) and Damian Howard took the 100 (12.1) and 200 (25.9). Athol won the 4x100 relay (53.5). 

Girls track

Mohawk Trail 114, Athol 19 — Heidi Helenek won the 100 hurdles (18.7), pole vault (6-6) and 400 (68.6) while Emmy Sisum won the triple jump (29-3.75) and 400 hurdles (76.6) in the Warriors’ win over the Bears in Buckland on Tuesday. 

Rounding out the Mohawk Trail winners were Natalie Lanoue in the long jump (13-9.25), Morgan Raffa in the javelin (93-2), Zephyr Jetzon in the 100 (13.6), Virginia Krezmien in the mile (5:55.5), Anya Read in the 800 (2:36.6) and Aryannah Thurman in the 200 (30.5). The Warriors won the 4x100 (56.0) and 4x400 (4:48.8) relays. 

For Athol, Piper Bailey won the high jump (4-8) while Karleigh Chase took the shot put (30-5.5) and discus (79-5).

Greenfield 4, Turners 1 — Michael Pierce smashed a two-run homer early and Caleb Thomas did the rest on the mound, going the distance and holding the Thunder to just one hit as the Green Wave earned a win over rival Turners on Tuesday in the Powertown. 

“It was a good high school game,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “Turners is a good team and is playing well. Caleb pitched well and we made plays in the field.” 

John Marchefka blasted two hits, one a double, and drove in a run, Chase Zraunig, Luca Siano and Nick Prasol singled while Thomas drove in a run for the Green Wave. 

Joey Mosca held Greenfield to four hits in five innings work while Jackson Cogswell had Turners’ lone hit. 

Softball

Hopkins 14, Athol 2 (6) — The Golden Hawks scored six runs in the second and added six more runs in the sixth, lifting Hopkins to a Franklin County League East win in Athol Tuesday. 

Jenna Bonenfant cracked two hits, one a double, and drove in two runs, Gianna Vaillancourt and Jaylynn Chapalonis both recorded two hits while Maddie Hermes doubled for Athol. 

Mahar 15, Hampden Charter East 3 — Laura McGinnis had a big day for the Senators, going 5-for-5 at the plate while striking out seven in the circle, lifting Mahar to its second win of the season on Tuesday. 

“They played well today,” Senators coach Jim Cleveland said. “Laura McGinnis was great in the circle and the defense played well behind her.” 

Kenzie Matthews cracked three hits while Carly Beaton and Autumn Knechtel both knocked two hits in the win for Mahar. 

Taconic 19, Pioneer 0 — The Panthers were unable to get a hit in an independent loss to the Thunder in Northfield on Tuesday. 

Ultimate

Four Rivers 15, Williston 10 — Cooper Whitney scored four goals and dished three assists as the Otters scored seven straight to pull off a comeback win over the Wildcats on Tuesday. 

The win moves Four Rivers to 13-1 on the season.
