The Mahar softball team is working hard to get its first win in a long time. 

The Senators — which are still searching for their first win post COVID — hosted Northampton on Monday, but the Blue Devils put runs up on the board in a hurry. 

Northampton scored four in the first inning, four in the second, tacked five on in the third before scoring four in the fourth and three in the fifth to build a 20-0 lead. Mahar got going in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs, but it came too late as the Blue Devils earned a 20-6 victory in five innings. 

“We’re very young,” Mahar coach Jim Cleveland said. “I started two seventh graders today with kids on vacation. We’re missing four starters with vacation. It’s a learning curve. We’re having trouble pitching and we’re trying to teach them how to win. They haven’t won in a long time. We’ve had our opportunities like against Pioneer last Friday. We’re getting there.”

MacKenzie Matthews and Alivia Patch each singled, doubled and drove in a run while Gabby Matthews, Carly Beaton and Avery Savage each hit safely for the Senators. 

Baseball

Turners 6, Greenfield 4 — Cam Burnett had a golden opportunity in front of him in the top of the seventh inning for the Thunder. 

With one out in the seventh, the senior stepped to the plate with Alex Quezada on third after he swiped a pair of bases following a base hit and Kainen Stevens on second after drawing a walk and stealing second. 

Burnett came through with a base hit to score both runners and give Turners the lead. Quezada didn’t allow the Green Wave to score in the seventh, with the Thunder pulling out an independent win over their rivals at Vets Field in Greenfield. 

“Turners got some big hits when it needed them,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. 

Turners scored one in the first, one in the fourth and two in the fifth before its seventh inning rally. The Green Wave tallied three times in the fourth and tied the game with a run in the sixth. 

Derek Wissmann cracked a pair of hits, one a double, and drove in two runs for the Thunder. Burnett added a base hit earlier in the game while Deven Sloan and Jackson Cogswell hit safely for Turners. Dylen Richardson got the start and struck out four while Quezada tossed the final two and two-third innings, striking out three. 

Chase Zraunig and Michael Pierce each had a single, a double and an RBI for Greenfield. Preston Lafleur struck out seven while Deven Dubie recorded three strikeouts in the loss. 

Pioneer 16, Palmer 4 — Make it six wins in a row to open the season for the Panthers, which scored in all seven innings to knock off host Palmer in an independent contest Monday. 

Pioneer scored three in the first, three in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to seal the win. 

Braeden Tsipenyuk knocked two doubles, a single and drove in a run, Jackson Glazier blasted two hits — one a double — and drove in four runs, Evan Tsipenyuk and Ben Werner each tallied two hits and two RBIs while Alex McClelland doubled and brought in a run in the win. 

McClelland tossed six innings, striking out nine. Braeden Tsipenyuk pitched the seventh and struck out one. 

McCann Tech 8, Franklin Tech 2 — Lukas Rylander struck out 10 and limited the Eagles to just three hits in an 8-2 McCann Tech victory on Monday in Turners Falls.

William Ainsworth and Brody Hicks each had a hit and scored a run for Franklin Tech, who also received a single from Mason Lehtomaki. Gavin Crossman walked and drove in a run for the hosts. Kyle Begos took the loss on the mound, striking out two and allowing just one earned run in 3 1/3 innings of work. McCann Tech scored two in the third inning and three more in the fourth to snatch control.

Boys track

Frontier 109, Franklin Tech 30 — Jack Storm took the long jump (19 feet, 2.25 inches), the triple jump (37-6.75) and the 100-meter dash (11.2 seconds) while Ben Cachiguango won the 100 hurdles (15.4) and the 200 (23.4) and Luke Howard came in first in the high jump (5-10), mile (4:56.9) and 800 (2:12.6), leading Frontier to a victory over the Eagles in Turners Falls on Monday. 

Alex Schreiber took the shot put (35-4.5) and 400 hurdles (1:16.7), Julian Adams won the discus (113-10), Aiden Dredge took the javelin (148-10), Brendan Dawson won the pole vault (5-6) and Adrien Pazmandy took the 400 (55.5) for the Redhawks. Frontier won the 4x400 relay (4:07.2). 

Anthony Gallo won the 2 mile (11:36.9) while Franklin Tech took the 4x100 relay (47.9). 

Girls track

Frontier 134, Turners 11 — Hannah Davis won the triple jump (30-11.5) and the 100 hurdles (18.0) while Nicole Plasse took the long jump (14-10) and 800 (2:37.4), helping the Redhawks walk away with a victory over the Thunder in Turners on Monday. 

Other Frontier winners were Lilly Novak in the shot put (27-7.5), Abbi Grover in the discus (86), Micky McCarthy in the javelin (83-10), Maia Christensen in the high jump (4-6), Ohia Dellert in the pole vault (6-3), Rylan Waskiewicz in the 100 (13.0) and 200 (28.0), Leah Gump in the mile (5:57.3), Josie Fosnot in the 400 (1:07), Maddie Antes in the 400 hurdles (1:16.9) and Sylvie DiBartolomeo in the 2 mile (12:45). The Redhawks won the 4x100 (55.3) and 4x400 (4:43.9) relays.

Boys volleyball

Springfield Central 3, Frontier 1 —Tavo Vincent-Warner finished with 26 assists to put him over the 1,000 assist mark of his career in Frontier’s 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-20 loss to the Golden Hawks in Springfield on Monday. 

Aleks Carey put down 19 kills and two aces, Jack Carey smashed eight kills and three aces while Vincent-Warner and Tegan Dexter each tallied two kills for the Redhawks. 

Boys tennis

PVCICS 4, Frontier 1 — Robert Fuqua picked up the lone win of the day for the Redhawks, knocking off Clayton English 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 in No. 2 singles in Frontier’s defeat in Hadley on Monday. 

Girls tennis

Lenox 5, Frontier 0 — Esther Ehle and Kayla Fagan took a set in No. 1 doubles while Thanushi Ratnatunge and Aylen Shaw fell 6-3, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles for the Redhawks in a loss to the Wildcats in Lee on Monday. 

Deerfield Academy results

Several Deerfield Academy teams were in action on Saturday, with the DA girls lacrosse (14-7) and boys lacrosse earning wins over Choate. 

Elsewhere, the Big Green baseball team beat Phillips Andover, 6-2, the DA golf team knocked off Phillips Exeter, 10.5-1.5, the Big Green softball team fell to Choate (16-3) while the girls tennis team lost to Taft (5-2) and the boys tennis team fell to Taft (6-1). 

On Monday, the DA baseball team beat Cushing, 4-3, while the Big Green girls tennis team beat Westminster, 8-1.
