The Greenfield indoor track team competed in the early portion of the PVIAC’s fourth meet of the season on Wednesday at Smith College, with a trio of Green Wave athletes earning top five finishes. 

On the boys’ side, Jackson Caron earned a third place finish in the 1 mile (four minutes, 56 seconds) while Mason Youmell came in fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.98 seconds). On the girls’ side, Suhani Patel walked away with a fourth place finish in the high jump (four feet, eight inches). 

Caron said after that it wasn’t his best run of the season, as it looked like he has second place wrapped up before being passed at the very end. 

“Honestly I didn’t run great today,” Caron said. “I felt tired and felt I got in my head and spaced out. That’s why I got passed in the end. I didn’t even realize he was there but that happens sometimes. I wish someone yelled that he was coming because I had no clue. It was funny.” 

Caron has already qualified for states in the mile, finishing with a time of 4:52 in the opening meet of the season which was six seconds below the 4:58 qualifying time he needed. 

Though many don’t think of technique in distance running, Caron said it’s something he’s working on for the remainder of the season to prepare for states. 

“Considering how the season has gone I’m happy,” he said. “I’m consistently under five [minutes in the mile] so I’m happy with that. I want to be faster and faster but I’ve been working on my technique and strategies going into races. You don’t think about that with distance running but you end up halfway through the race and not knowing whether to speed up or slow down. In that race I failed to use the techniques so that was frustrating.” 

Youmell added a ninth place finish in the high jump (5-4) and an 11th place finish in the 600 (1:39.09). Caron took sixth in the 1,000 (2:54.93), Dylan Brewick finished in 14th in the mile (5:33.49), Alex Scotera finished in 10th in the 2 mile (11:31) while Jerry Ven placed 10th in the shot put (33-7.5). In team scoring the Greenfield boys beat Commerce (68-22) but fell to South Hadley (51-43). 

On the girls’ side, Lauren Helie took 19th in the 1,000 (4:06.81), Julia Belville came in 12th in the high jump (4-2) and Emilia Gray placed 18th in the long jump (12-0). The Green Wave beat Commerce (40-21) and lost to South Hadley (76-10).

Athol 61, Turners 57 — The Bears looked to be in control heading into the fourth quarter, holding a 44-33 lead. 

Turners saved its best for last, however, putting 24 points on the board over the final eight minutes to get back in the game. Athol was able to withstand the charge and hang on for a Hampshire League North victory in Turners Falls on Wednesday. 

“Give Turners credit for not giving up,” Bears coach Brian Patria said. “We got complacent in the fourth quarter for sure. We will continue to get every team's best thrown at us. Glad to get the win.”

Angel Castillo finished with 21 points while Ray Castine (12) and Ben Kearney (10) joined him in double-figures. Colby Goodwin scored six points and Ethan Bacigalupo added five points in the win. 

Branden Truesdell led Turners with 21 points, seven coming in the fourth quarter. Caden Williams-Senethavisouk tossed in 14 points, Joey Mosca scored nine points while Jackson Cogswell tallied five points in the loss. 

Drury 56, Frontier 50 — Playing without leading-scorer Max Millette, the Redhawks hung tough with the Blue Devils. Drury entered the fourth quarter with a 47-39 lead and held Frontier off to earn a Hampshire League South win in North Adams on Wednesday. 

Owen Babb finished with 17 points, Sasha Dragicevich scored 14 points, Alex Ellis tallied nine points while Nico Fasulo finished with six points for Frontier. 

Mount Greylock 71, Franklin Tech 32 — Des Cobb’s 29 points powered the Mounties past the Eagles in a Hampshire League North contest in Williamstown on Wednesday. 

Greylock led 43-18 at the half. Robert Belval tallied eight points while Jack Gancarz, Gabe Mota and Cam Candelaria each had four points for Franklin Tech. 

Four Rivers 62, Putney 25 — A 17-point performance from Isaiah Goldman helped the Otters pick up a win over Putney on Wednesday in Vermont. 

Cooper Whitney tossed in 16 points while Meir Dragon and Ethan Sandberg each tallied eight points for Four Rivers. 

Girls basketball

Pioneer 50, Drury 42 — The Panthers held a 27-19 lead at the half before pulling away with an independent win over the Blue Devils at Messer Gymnasium on Wednesday. 

Addie Harrington finished with 15 points, Kyler McClelland scored 14 points, Natalie Rios recorded 11 points while Hailey Ring scored 10 points for Pioneer. 

Wrestling

Athol 54, Frontier 30 — The Bears came away with a victory over the Redhawks at Mallet Gymnasium on Wednesday. 

Wyatt Finch (120), Ben Baker (144), Konnor James (150), Ed Mieczkowski (175) and Javion Cabrera (285) earned wins via pin for Frontier. 

Winners for Athol were not available. 

Girls swimming

Turners 67, Renaissance 15 — Ainslee Flynn won the 200-yard IM with a time of 3:07.21, helping the Thunder earn a win over the Phoenix in Turners on Wednesday. 

Sophia McComb took first in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Sigrid Calhoun came in second in the 50 free (39.22), Sylvie DiBartolomeo placed first in the 500 free while Rose Fortin took second in the 500 free to help Turners earn the victory. 

Girls swimming

Renaissance 67, Turners 20 — Tyler Galenski won the 100 free while Liam Bliss came in first in the 50 free for the Thunder in a loss to the Phoenix in Turners on Wednesday. 

Connor Glennon placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 500 free while Cody McDonough came in second in the 100 breast for Turners.

Mt. Institute Ski

The second Mt. Institute Ski League race took place on Wednesday at Berkshire East, with the Northfield Mount Hermon boys and girls both earning first place team finishes. 

Hogger Elianna Umana Kimura took first in the girls race with a combined run time of 90.96 seconds. Bridget Stephen took  third (94.74), Kathryn Werner placed fifth (96.78), Vittoria Pinci came in sixt   h (96.99), Ludovica Frecciami came in seventh (97.0) while Katalin Mazansky took eighth (97.13) for NMH. 

In the boys race Hogger Ryan Choi took first (84.50) while Cody Vassar (third, 87.50), Sam Rotermund (fourth, 87.55), Robby Zuccotti (fifth, 90.39), Cavan Finnerty (sixth, 92.57) and Oliver Newman (10th, 94.12) rounded out the top 10 finishers for NMH. 

 Deerfield Academy, who took second as a team in the girls race, had three top 10 finishers, led by Jing Wang who placed second (92.80). Cecelia Cramer took ninth (97.33) and Josephine Cramer came in 10th (97.98). 

The Big Green also took second in the boys race. Johnny Monty came in second (85.75), Beckett Baird took seventh (92.76) and Andrew Lewis finished in eighth (92.78) for Deerfield.
