H.S. Roundup: Franklin Tech girls basketball defeats Montachusett for ninth win in a row

Make it nine wins in a row for the Franklin Tech girls basketball team. 

The Eagles took on Montachusett on Monday and outscored the Bulldogs 25-21 in the second half to help earn a 48-41 independent victory in Turners Falls. 

Hannah Gilbert finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, Lea Chapman tossed in 13 points and pulled down 17 rebounds while Kyra Goodell scored 13 points and snatched nine rebounds for Tech. 

Haleigh Benoit added seven points and 10 rebounds in the win.

The Eagles (13-2) will travel to Ware on Thursday.

Putnam 51, Athol 20 — Olivia Horrigan tallied eight points for the Bears in a Franklin County League South loss to the Beavers at Mallet Gymnasium on Monday. 

Anna Duquette scored six points and blocked five shots while Jenna Bonenfant added four points for Athol. 

Easthampton 53, Greenfield 47 — Amber Bergeron did what she could to keep the Green Wave in the game, going off for 36 points. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Eagles led 41-32 going into the fourth and were able to hang on for a Franklin County League North win in Easthampton on Monday.

Tayler Bergeron knocked down a pair of 3’s to finish with six points, Anna Bucala scored three points while Carly Blanchard added two points for Greenfield. 

Palmer 46, Mahar 41 — Eighth grader Taylor Paluk knocked down four 3’s to finish with 14 points for the Sens, though the Panthers were able to hold on for a Franklin County League North win in Orange on Monday. 

“It was great to see Taylor, an eighth grader, step up,” Mahar coach Steve Bonk said. “Our girls played hard.” 

Paluk added six rebounds for the Senators. Irati Martinez scored 11 points, Alivia Patch tallied six points while Nevaeh Scribner drained a 3 in the loss. 

Boys basketball

Hoosac 72, Greenfield 54 — The Green Wave hoped to challenge itself with its non-league schedule this winter and had one of its toughest tests on Monday against the Hurricanes, falling at Nichols Gymnasium. 

Hoosac led 34-22 at the half and 55-42 after three quarters. It was Frank Field who gave Greenfield trouble, scoring 34 points. 

Jon Breor finished with 17 points, Caleb Thomas tossed in 16 points, Grayson Thomas recorded 10 points while Caleb Murray added nine points for the Green Wave. 

Eagle Hill 47, Four Rivers 35 — Isaiah Goleman scored nine points for the Otters in a loss to the Pioneers on Monday. 

Weekend results


Competing in the Phillips Andover Girls Wrestling tournament on Sunday, Frontier's Jocelyn Antes earned a third place finish. She went 3-1 on the day with three pins. 

The Redhawk boys wrestling team traveled to Mount Greylock to compete in the Mountie Invitational on Saturday. Javion Cabrera (285) and Ber Calhoun (106) each earned third place finishes, both securing four points on the day. 

Konnor James (150) won three matches with two pins and a major decision. Antes (120) went 2-2 with a pin and a decision win, Wyatt Finch (120) went 2-2 with two pins while Ed Mieczkowski (175), Kaden James (215) and Ben Baker (144) each won a match. 

Deerfield results

Here are the Deerfield Academy results from the weekend: boys squash beat St. Paul’s (5-2), while girls squash lost to St. Paul’s (6-1). Wrestling beat Salisbury (42-36), girls hockey fell to Andover (3-2), boys hockey lost to Hotchkiss (5-1), girls basketball lost to Hotchkiss (53-34), boys basketball fell to Belmont Hill (67-60) while boys and girls swimming lost to Andover.

Turners 70, Hampden Charter West 2 — Sylvie DiBartolomeo won the 500-yard freestyle and the 200 free for the Thunder in a win over Hampden Charter on Friday. 

Bre Kempf took second in the 100 free, Addie Ehle placed second in the 100 breast, Sigrid Calhoun finished in second in the 100 back while Keira Feeley, Kempf, Maya Deramo and Shelby Paris came in second in the 200 free relay for Turners. 

Boys swimming

Turners 44, Hampden Charter West 9 — Liam Bliss won the 100 back and 50 free to help the Thunder knock off Hampden Charter on Friday. 

Tyler Galenski won the 100 free and 200 free, Matt Sibley won the 200 IM while Cody McDonough took first in the 100 breast and second in the 50 free for Turners.
