HS Roundup: Ethan Heuer, Logan Cormier power Athol baseball past Mahar 11-1

It was all Athol in the battle of North Quabbin rivals Friday, as the Bears scored in every frame en route to an 11-1 five-inning run-ruled victory over Mahar in Orange.
Tied 1-1 after one inning, Athol scored two in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth.
“We were able to grind out a lot of at-bats, fight off some pitches, and wear [Mahar pitcher Matt] Vitello down,” Athol coach Josh Talbot said. “He throws the ball well and we put the ball in play at some critical times.”
Ethan Heuer was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to pace the Athol attack, while Raydin Sousa drove in three runs and Alex Lavigne was 2-for-2.
Gavin Young drove in the lone Mahar run in the bottom of the first inning, plating Freeland Ringer.
Logan Cormier struck out eight in five innings, allowing just two hits and one walk.
“Cormier wasn't super crisp to start, but settled in after the first and controlled the game,” Talbot said. “He's super talented and someone we will need a lot of innings out of to get to where we want to be.”
Franklin Tech 4, St. Mary’s 1 – The Eagles did all of their damage in a four-run bottom of the third inning, and Brody Hicks struck out five in five solid innings on the bump to lift the hosts to a 4-1 win on Friday in Turners Falls.

Gavin Crossman tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the save in relief of Hicks. Wade Bardwell had two hits to pace the Franklin Tech offense, while Nick Prasol and Hicks drove in runs during the third inning.
Franklin Tech (2-0) allowed just a single run in the top of the fourth.
Greenfield 5, Easthampton 3 — The Green Wave got their season going on the right foot, as Caleb Thomas pitched five innings and struck out nine to lift Greenfield to a Suburban League West victory at Vets Field on Friday.
Luca Siano doubled to drive in two runs while Logan Moore tripled in a run while pitching the last two innings, striking out one and surrendering no walks for the Wave. Thomas added a hit and an RBI at the plate, Chase Zraunig and Conner Bergeron singled while Urijah Jenness knocked in a run in the winning effort.
Pioneer 10, Southwick 1 — Ethan Quinn struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced to lead the Panthers to an independent victory in Northfield on Friday.
Pioneer (3-0) scored five in the third and three in the fourth.
Alex McClelland singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Braeden Tsipenyuk and Ben Werner each tallied two hits and an RBI, Evan Tsipenyuk doubled in a run, Ethan Quinn recorded a hit and an RBI while Jackson Campbell added two hits in the victory. Jackson Glazier added five strikeouts on the mound for the Panthers.
Frontier 12, Amherst 3 — Max Skribiski-Banack struck out seven over five innings and scattered just one hit to help the Redhawks improve to 4-0 with a road win over the Hurricanes on Friday.
Kaden James doubled twice and added a single, Ben Caron knocked two hits and stole five bases, Grayson Bishop tallied two hits and four steals, Shawn Baumann cracked two hits while Cam Skiffington hit safely in the victory for Frontier.
Smith Academy 25, Mahar 13 — The Falcons earned a road win over the Senators in Orange on Friday.
Gabby Matthews had three hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs for Mahar. Cordelia Rhodes also had three hits, while Carly Paluk slashed two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Greenfield 4, Turners 1 – The Green Wave swept the doubles points en route to their first victory of the season Friday in Turners Falls.
The No. 1 doubles team of Lizzy Derivolkova and Adele Bross notched a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win while the second doubles pairing of Destiney Rodrigues and Stella Longe scored a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Izzy Semonelli outlasted Turners’ Avery Heathwaite at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, while Karinna Kostov was a 6-1, 6-2 winner for the Wave (1-1) over Turners’ Gia Marigliano at No. 3.
Olivia Wolbach snagged Turners’ point at No. 1 singles, scoring a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win over Amy Mihailicenco.
PVCICS 4, Frontier 1 – The second doubles team of Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez captured the point for the Redhawks, as they were 6-1, 6-3 winners on Friday.
Esther Ehle and Kayla Fagan dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles for Frontier.
Frontier 3, Putnam 0 – Nate Rivera put down 10 kills and Will Reading added seven to lift the Redhawks to an impressive 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 sweep on Friday night at Goodnow Gymnasium.
Tavo Vincent-Warner racked up 21 assists and 11 digs to aid the Frontier cause.
