GREENFIELD — The Greenfield girls basketball team had no problem finding a rhythm on offense in its season opener against Mohawk Trail on Tuesday.

The Green Wave exploded for 17 points in the first quarter, tacked 12 points on in the second quarter to take a 29-12 lead at the half before putting 19 points on the board in the third to take a commanding 48-16 lead.

Amber Bergeron was the engine that drove the Greenfield attack, as the senior finished with 27 points to help the Green Wave pick up a 63-29 independent win at Nichols Gymnasium.

"Always good to start out with a win," Greenfield coach Ben Johnson said. "There's plenty of things we need to improve on but a win is a win."

It was Bergeron who scored the final eight points of the first quarter to give the Green Wave (1-0) a 17-6 lead after eight minutes.

Leading 29-12 at the break, Bergeron got to the hoop for a pair of buckets while adding seven points in the remainder of the quarter to help give Greenfield its big lead after three quarters.

It wasn't just Bergeron who got in on the action offensively for the Green Wave. Anna Bucala finished with 11 points, Tayler Bergeron scored 10 points, Carly Blanchard scored eight points while Gloria McDonald had five points in the win.

Johnson noted how much more confident his players look this year compared to a season ago.

"A lot of girls are stepping up," Johnson said. "The girls are more comfortable out there, they're playing hard and you can see they're much more confident when they're looking for their offense."

Abi Dobias led Mohawk Trail (2-2) with seven points while Zephyr Jetzen, Bella Pettengill, Rachel Pease and Valerie Bzomowski each scored four points.

The Warriors have already doubled their win total from last year after winning their opening two games of the season.

For first year coach Steve Bzomowski, continuing to make strides each game, no matter the result, is the goal for the remainder of the season. He said he's already seen improvement in his short time with the team.

"The most important thing with this group, where it's a rebuilding process, is that they learn to believe in themselves," Steve Bzomowski said. "That comes with practice, repetition, sticking together and positive interaction. We're seeing that. It'll pay dividends in the future."

Frontier 64, Franklin Tech 24 — It was a dominant night inside Goodnow Gymnasium for the Redhawks.
