GREENFIELD – Size didn’t matter much to the Greenfield boys basketball team Tuesday against Frontier Regional.

The Green Wave controlled the Hampshire League South matchup from the opening tip in a 73-45 victory at Nichols Gymnasium despite giving up a few inches at nearly every position.

“With anybody’s season, the processes that we go through during the season, figuring out what everybody can do, we’re trending in the right place,” Greenfield coach Angelo Thomas said. “Energy and effort. Any high school teenage boy or girl, you give energy and effort and you’ll have a good chance to win the game.”

Greenfield (7-3, 2-3 Hampshire South) opened with an 8-2 run and pushed it to double digits (17-6) with 1 minute, 39 seconds remaining in the first after a Jon Breor layup.

The Green Wave led 38-16 at halftime and stretched their lead as large as 33.

Breor paced Greenfield with 18 points. Jax Campbell hit five 3s to score 15 points, including several early ones that gave Greenfield room to operate. Caleb Thomas added 13 points and Caleb Murray chipped in nine.

Owen Babb led Frontier (6-7, 0-3) with 16 points.

Athol 61, Franklin Tech 37 — It was a second quarter to remember for the Bears.

Trailing 15-9 after one period, Athol exploded over the next eight minutes. The hosts outscored Franklin Tech by a 29-5 margin in the frame, taking a 38-20 halftime lead en route to a Hampshire League North victory on Tuesday at Mallet Gymnasium.

“We started off slow, it took us a bit to get our defensive engines going,” Athol coach Brian Patria began. “The second quarter sent that message.”

Logan Cormier scored 10 of his 12 points in the second quarter for Athol (8-3). Conall Tontodonato led the way with 16 points in total, followed by Angel Castillo with 14, including four 3-pointers.

Franklin Tech’s Ty Sadoski hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 13 points. Gabe Mota tossed in nine points and Noah Ausikaitis added seven.

• Athol also won the JV game, 54-34, thanks to a balanced scoring effort led by Dominick St. Andre’s 10 points. Ten different Bears scored points, including nine from Dominic Pope.

Franklin Tech’s Levi Halla led all scorers with 17 points.

Girls basketball

Franklin Tech 46, Mohawk Trail 19 — Lea Chapman poured in a game-high 17 points, and the visiting Eagles methodically pulled away for a 46-19 victory on Tuesday in Buckland.

Franklin Tech (11-1) led 12-2 after one quarter and 21-6 at halftime. Kaitlin Trudeau joined Chapman in double figures with 10 points, while Hannah Gilbert notched eight points in the win.

Mohawk Trail’s Bella Pet tengill paced the hosts with eight points on the nigh t, while Rachel Pease hit a 3-pointer and finished with seven.

Boys swimming

Turners 62, Chicopee 28 — Liam Bliss won the 200-yard individual medley (two minutes, 39 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:18), while Matt Sibley took first in the 100 free (1:20) and 100 back (1:42) to help lift the Thunder to a victory over the host Pacers on Tuesday. 

Cody McDonough came in first in the 200 free (2:58) and 100 breaststroke (1:33) and Tyler Galenski won the 500 free (8:16) while Sibley, McDonough, Bliss and Galenski teamed up to win the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. 

Girls swimming

Chicopee 65, Turners 49 — Despite six first-place fin ishes, the Thunder fell just short on the road against the Pacers on Tuesday. 

Adelaide Ehle came in first in the 200 IM (3:22) and the 100  breast (1:43) and Addy Wood took first in the 50 free (34 seconds) and 100 fly (1:44). In the relays, Wood, Ehle, Avery Heathwaite and Kylee Gamache won the 200 medley relay while the team of Gamache, Nicole Porter, Ehle and Wood won the 200 free relay.
