Bulletin Board: Greenfield’s Makayla Valente stops 23 shots in loss to Smith Academy (PHOTOS)

Greenfield’s Makayla Valente was busy in net against the Smith Academy girls soccer team on Thursday. 

The Falcons peppered Valente with 25 shots and she was able to come up with 23 saves, many of them big ones to keep things in hand. 

Smith Academy was able to find the back of the net twice in the first half and came away with a 2-1 Bi-County League win in Greenfield. 

“Makayla Valente had a brilliant game in net,” Green Wave coach Ben Johnson said. “She was left on an island countless times and came up with some huge saves. She was the reason we were still in the game at the end.”

Indie Merrill had the lone goal for Greenfield, scoring in the first half. Story Goldman and Caitlin Graves were the Falcon goal-scorers. 

Athol 5, Pathfinder 2 — Liz Mailloux and Samantha Mailloux each scored twice as the Bears earned a Bi-County League victory over the Pioneers on Thursday in Three Rivers. 

Hannah Cordosa also found the back of the net and added two assists for Athol. Liz Mailloux, Samantha Mailloux and Emma Bacigalupo all had assists in the win. 

Franklin Tech 8, Duggan 0 — Sofia Moreno netted the first varsity goals of her career, and seven different Eagles tallied in a tidy 8-0 victory over Duggan on Thursday in Turners Falls.

One of Moreno’s goals came via a penalty kick. Franklin Tech (3-4) led 4-0 at halftime.

Laken Woodard scored a goal and assisted on three others, while Kailey Putnam (goal), Cailin McClure (goal), Kyra Goodell (goal), Mckayla Sevene (goal), Pam Gomez (goal), Ella Kolodziej (two assists) and Anne Kolodziej (assist) all contributed offensively.

Madeline Brandl and Kylee Gamache each made a save in the Franklin Tech net to combine for a shutout. The Eagles travel to Pathfinder for a key Bi-County League tilt on Friday.

Field hockey

Franklin Tech 8, Mahar 0 — Five different Eagles lit up the scoreboard on Thursday, leading to an 8-0 independent win over the Senators in Turners. 

Keira Stevens led the way for Franklin Tech, tallying a hat trick and adding an assist. Kait Trudeau scored twice, Lilly Ross had a goal and two assists, Hannah Gilbert and Meredith Bistrek each had a goal and an assist while Kendra Campbell (two) and Talia Pederzini-Curtis both recorded an assist for the Eagles. 

Madison Markwell made one save in the win while Savannah Von Schmidt came up with eight saves for Mahar. 

Pioneer 2, Hampshire 0 — Kelsey Sargent scored off a dish from Riley Thayer before Lawryn Kalinowski found the back of the cage off a pass from Sofia Walker to lift the Panthers to a 2-0 County League win over the Raiders in Westhampton on Thursday. 

Kelly Baird stopped four shots in the victory. 


Frontier 3, South Hadley 0 — Jillian Apanell put down 10 aces and one kill while Sophia Pinardi added four kills and Olivia Machon tallied four kills and two aces as the Redhawks earned a 25-8, 25-11, 25-7 win over the Tigers on Tuesday at Goodnow Gymnasium. 

Aine Carey had seven assists, Allie Pierce tallied five assists and seven aces, Arianna Miller had a trio of kills and aces, Emilie Cardaleria had a pair of kills and assists while Shelby Orloski had two aces in the victory. 

Easthampton 3, Greenfield 0 — Mackensie Goncavles smashed five kills and made three digs, Karisma Santana recorded seven kills and Rachel Dodge dished 11 assists and added three aces in the Green Wave’s loss to the Eagles on Thursday in Easthampton. 

Mohawk Trail 3, Mahar 1 — Grace Davenport put down five kills and three aces, Palmer King tallied six kills and five aces while Riley Giard put down five aces and two kills to lift the Warriors to a 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory over the Senators on Thursday. 

Maddie Lamorie added three assists and Sophia Goodnow had three aces in the win. 

Saylor Kegans had six aces, four kills and two blocks, Mia Santana had an ace, a kill and an assist, Cordelia Rhodes put down two aces, Kenzie Scribner and Andelyz Colon-Gonzalez each had two aces and Emilia Ramos had an ace in the loss for Mahar. 


Hampshire 14.5, Pioneer 9.5 — Brayden Thayer shot a team-low 44 for the Panthers in a loss to the Raiders at Beaver Brook Golf Course on Thursday. 

Ethan Mauthe (47) and Ben Werner (48) won their matchups while Mike Stennes (48), Hugh Cyhowski (55) and Cam Curtis (54) rounded out the Pioneer lineup.

Late Wednesday results

• It was a wild one in Turners on Wednesday between the Franklin Tech and Smith Voc boys soccer teams. 

The Vikings took a 4-2 lead into the half after Rosco Palmer scored his fourth goal of the game in the 38th minute. Eagle David Klempner found the back of the net off a dish from Yolvin Ovalle-Mejia to cut the lead to 4-3 in the 46th minute and Klempner scored an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to force a 4-4 tie. 

Sam Lashtur scored both of the Franklin Tech’s goals in the first half, one off an assist from Wesley Berduga and the other off a dish from Robert Belval. 

• Maddie Bennet had the lone tally for the Frontier girls soccer team against Palmer, as the Redhawks fell, 3-1. Cadi Wells-Robinson made 11 saves in the loss. 

• Here are the Deerfield Academy scores from Wednesday: DA’s boys water polo team beat Suffield, 8-6. In field hockey, the Big Green beat Milton, 2-1, in overtime. Girls volleyball beat Loomis, 3-0, while in boys soccer, DA fell to Taft, 5-0. The Big Green lost to Taft, 1-0, in girls soccer.
