GREENFIELD — Two people were hospitalized following a head-on collision on the Route 2 bypass near Adams Road Thursday afternoon.

First responders were dispatched after 1:30 p.m. for a report of two pickup trucks colliding head-on just past the Adams Road, French King Highway and Route 2 intersection. One driver was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center, while the other driver, an older man, was taken by LifeFlight after firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove him from the vehicle, according to Fire Chief Robert Strahan.

Greenfield Deputy Police Chief William Gordon said around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday that Greenfield Police, with assistance from State Police, are investigating the crash as a “possible medical issue.” Gordon expected the road to be open before 5 p.m.

A dog that was inside one of the vehicles was transported to Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital in South Deerfield. Strahan said there were also some fluids that firefighters had to control.

Colrain Ambulance, American Medical Response (AMR), the Greenfield Fire and Police departments, and State Police responded. Strahan said additional off-duty firefighters were also called in to assist.
