HAWLEY — With a nearly level-funded budget requests, Annual Town Meeting voters quickly approved all spending measures for the budget year that begins in July.

They agreed to an operating budget of $977,194, which is about $1,296 less than the current town operating budget. And, while the Mohawk Trail Regional School District assessment went up by $7,613, the Hawlemont assessment dropped by $17,634.

Hawley became the seventh Mohawk member town to approve taking the Rowe tuition formula for Grades 7 through 12 students out of the regional agreement. This leaves Charlemont as the last Mohawk member town to vote on this district change. Hawley also supported adding vocational transportation into Mohawk’s agreement, since Hawley, which is not a vocational school district member, benefits from Mohawk’s negotiating school bus transportation on the town’s behalf.

Hawley passed over two Mohawk-related school articles: One was to approve asbestos removal work at the Buckland Shelburne Elementary School, and the other passed-over article regarded moving Mohawk elementary schools’ sixth-graders into a wing of the Mohawk Trail Regional High School. Since Hawley children attend the Hawlemont Regional School, Hawley’s sixth-graders would not have been affected by the Grade 6 move, which has already been defeated by other towns. Hawley also was not affected by the Buckland Shelburne renovations, which are to be paid for by Buckland and Shelburne only. Passing over the Buckland Shelburne article simply shows that Hawley doesn’t object to it. School renovations for any Mohawk school are submitted to all member towns, in accordance with the regional agreement.

Voters OK’d $30,000 from its “Free Cash” reserved to make payments on its used Fire Department pumper truck and a 1-ton Highway Department truck.
