HAWLEY — Despite the growing list of event cancellations locally and across the state, Hawley officials are moving forward with plans to hold a Special Town Meeting Monday.

The Special Town Meeting is asking approval from the town to transfer up to $40,000 from the Fire Equipment Stabilization Fund to purchase a 1996 Pumper and related equipment, according to the meeting’s warrant.

The fire truck, which is currently in Plattsburg, N.Y., would replace the station’s oldest truck, according to the town website. The Hawley Fire Department has been looking for a replacement for the past year.

For the vote to be accepted, a quorum of 10 is required.

Conscious of the risks posed by the spread of COVID-19, the town plans to take a number of precautions in order limit exposure to the highly contagious virus.

The meeting will take place Monday at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall parking lot and minimal seating will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to stand, if possible, and a minimum of 6 feet is expected to be between them.

The town is also recommending anyone who is elderly or who has a compromised immune system to stay home, and instead send in questions or comments by mail (8 Pudding Hollow Road, Hawley, MA), by phone (413-339-5518), or by email (info@townofhawley.com) with the subject line “Special Town Meeting.”

And of course, anyone who has a fever or is experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms is asked to stay home to avoid putting others at risk.
