HADLEY — Three people were hospitalized with unknown injuries Sunday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision along Route 47 near the Sunderland town line, according to Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel.

The crash was reported at 1:27 p.m., Spanknebel said. Emergency personnel found a red Chevy Equinox and a black Toyota Yaris, each with heavy front-end damage, off the road and on the front lawn of 440 River Drive. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Hadley Police Department.

The Chevy’s sole occupant was able to escape the vehicle unassisted, while the Toyota’s two occupants had to be extricated. Two people were transported via Hadley’s Action EMS and South County EMS to the trauma center at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, while one person was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital via South County EMS.

Both vehicles had airbags deployed and were deemed a total loss by Spanknebel. They were towed by Ernie’s Towing.

Other responding agencies included the Hadley Police Department and Sunderland Fire Department.

The affected stretch of Route 47 and River Road was closed to traffic for roughly one hour while emergency personnel worked at the scene. Southbound traffic was turned around at the border of Sunderland and Hadley, while northbound traffic was turned around at Cold Spring Lane.
